Santiago Gimenez recently scored the winner for Mexico in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final and played a leading role in his country’s success.
There has been a range of clubs across Europe that have been interested in the young Mexican, including those in the English Premier League.
The Gold Cup winning goal from Gimenez has sparked further interest from several top clubs, so it will be interesting to see where he ends up come the end of the transfer window.
We assess what the future holds for the highly rated forward.
Who is Santiago Gimenez?
Gimenez is a 22-year-old forward who signed for Feyenoord last summer and found the back of the net an impressive 23 times in 45 appearances in all competitions.
The Mexican forward had to wait patiently on the bench in his early stages as a Feyenoord player, but soon cemented his place in the starting line-up where he flourished. He was crucial as Feyenoord won their first Eredivisie title since 2017.
It remains to be seen as to whether Gimenez will part ways with the Dutch club after he signed just a year ago, but if a big European club comes calling then it might be difficult to turn down the opportunity.
Move to the EPL?
There have been several English top flight sides interested in Gimenez’s signature this summer, namely Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United.
There were reports towards the later stages of last season suggesting that Manchester United had been in contact with Gimenez’s representatives, but there has been no sign of a concrete offer as of yet.
Gimenez could take to life in the EPL perfectly, after he showed his explosive speed in the Gold Cup Final to earn his Nation the trophy.
Other clubs in Europe interested
The recent impressive performances from Gimenez has caused several clubs outside of England to be interested in signing him, mainly Atletico Madrid and Benfica.
Although playing in England is a huge attraction to many players, Gimenez might be keen on a move to either Benfica or Atletico, as they both have UEFA Champions League football to contend with next term.
However, the sought after Mexican could have a high price tag as he still has three years remaining on his current contract with Feyenoord, so they will be in no rush to sell him.
