Everybody has their own set of tactics when it comes to FPL – whether it means stacking your squad with defenders who are likely to get clean sheets, or banking on the big-name forwards to get goals for you every week, there are many different options to choose from.
Here are some of the best tips and tricks ahead of Gameweek 1!
Positional changes
Player positions are a big part of FPL. For example, a player like Mohamed Salah being listed as a midfielder despite playing a lot of his football as a forward makes him a useful player to have in your squad if you want to free up spaces for more forwards.
This season there have been a few notable positional changes. For example, Arsenal’s new signing Kai Havertz has been changed from a forward to a midfielder after his move from Chelsea. Havertz has been tipped to start in midfield for Arsenal, but with Gabriel Jesus’ injury ruling him out for the start of the season, Havertz may be a good option to back for the opening fixtures after a strong pre-season.
Fixture watch
It is essential to look at each team’s fixtures heading into the first month of fixtures. Newcastle enjoyed an excellent season last year, but their opening six fixtures are easily the most difficult of any of the top teams from last season.
It is important to note that the official FPL site doesn’t consider show European or midweek cup fixtures on their app – if a big side has an important UEFA Champions League fixture on a Wednesday, then the next Saturday they may choose to rotate their squad in order to keep players fresh.
Use your boosts effectively
The bench boost, triple captain and free hit boosts can be game changing features if used effectively. Last season due to the FIFA World Cup causing massive fixture congestion over the course of the season, there were many different weeks where multiple teams played twice across the course of the week.
This means that if you use a triple captain on a big name striker who has two easy fixtures in a week, it can boost your points massively. In the 2016/17 season Harry Kane scored seven goals in just two games – a triple captain boost this week could change your entire league standing.
