This Sunday, Nigeria face São Tomé and Príncipe in an AFCON Qualifier and we picked three talking points ahead of what is set to be a highly contested affair.
Nigeria narrowly beat Sierra Leone 3-2 on their last time out in an AFCON qualifier thanks to a 95th minute winner from Kelechi Iheanacho to secure the three points.
São Tomé and Príncipe disappointingly were on the receiving end of a 1-0 defeat against Guinea- Bissau, meaning they remain rock bottom of group A.
Nigeria to top the group?
Nigeria currently sit top of group A and they have booked their place at AFCON next year after winning four of their five qualifiers in the group.
With São Tomé and Príncipe sitting at the bottom of the pile in group A, the Super Eagles are fully expected to win this one with the quality that they have within their ranks.
Jose Peseiro will know that finishing top of the group will give them added confidence heading into the tournament next year, so he certainly will not be taking this match lightly.
Osimhen to continue league form?
Victor Osimhen has started the 2023/24 season how he left off from last term, scoring three goals in three games for Napoli is Serie A.
The Nigeria forward has found the back of the net 17 times in 25 games for his country, so heading into AFCON 2024 his performances will be integral to their tournament success.
Considering the heights that Osimhen has reached over the past few seasons, he will certainly be hoping that he can add to his goal tally against significantly weaker opposition.
Damage limitation for São Tomé and Príncipe
The last time these two sides faced each other, Nigeria ended up smashing their opponents 10-0, with star man Osimhen being involved in six of the goals.
São Tomé and Príncipe cannot qualify for AFCON 2024, but they will know that their pride is at stake and will be happy if they perform well and keep the score down against a strong Nigerian side.
