The 2023/24 season has kicked off around Europe and with that returns the expectations and hope that football fans experience year on year supporting their teams.
While many will be focused only on their team’s results, others will be looking at how players have been performing in this early stage of the season.
This report will be doing exactly that, as we look at how some of the Nigerian stars have started their season’s.
Victor Osimhen
After recording his most prolific season to date last campaign, where he scored 26 league goals, Osimhen looks as though he has picked up from where he left off. The number nine has started this season in fantastic form, scoring three in Napoli’s first four league games while also netting a hat-trick for Nigeria during the international break.
Terem Moffi
Another one who seems to have picked up from where they left off last season is OGC Nice forward Moffi. A stellar last season saw Moffi earn a January move from FC Lorient to Nice, ending the season with 18 league goals across both clubs. The striker has continued this form so far this year, scoring three and assisting twice in his side’s opening five games. This includes two goals and one assist as Moffi had a hand in all three Nice goals as they went on to beat PSG 3-2 last weekend.
Taiwo Awoniyi
Nigeria don’t seem to be lacking in the striker department, as Awoniyi is yet another who has kicked off this season in fine form. The Nottingham Forest striker enjoyed his first English Premier League season last year, managing 11 goal contributions come the end of the season. He looks as though he may improve on that this time out though as the Nigerian has scored or assisted in every league game thus far, scoring three and assisting twice including goals against Manchester United and Arsenal.
Samuel Chukwueze
Last season Chukwueze achieved his best league campaign to date with 11 goals and assists for Villarreal. This earned him his summer move to Italian giants AC Milan, but the forward hasn’t quite hit the ground running for his new side. Despite it being early days, the Nigerian is yet to start in the league for the Rossoneri finding himself behind fellow new signing Christian Pulisic in the battle for the right wing spot.
However, as the season progresses the winger is sure to get his chances in a Milan shirt and provide the type of performances that earned him his move in the first place.
Ademola Lookman
Lookman’s first season in Italy last year saw the Nigerian show a level to his game that we had yet to see in his career, as he scored 13 and assisted six for Atalanta. While this season hasn’t started off in quite the same form, the forward registered his first goal of the season in his most recent appearance against Fiorentina. Lookman will be hoping this is the catalyst to kickstart his season as he looks to replicate and improve on last season.
