This year’s Africa Cup of Nations group stage ended in dramatic fashion as some of the top sides shockingly crashed out of the tournament, while others were saved by being one of the four best third-placed sides.
With AFCON now moving into the round of 16, we have been provided with clashes between some of the best sides in the competition. One of these sees Nigeria face up against Cameroon on Saturday evening, with the other standout game seeing hosts Ivory Coast play Senegal.
Read on as we take a look at Nigeria vs Cameroon and pick out our top tips and booking codes:
Nigeria vs Cameroon
Saturday 27 January, 21:00
Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny
Nigeria qualified through Group A in second place, joint on seven points with top of the group Equatorial Guinea but with an inferior goal difference of just two compared to Equatorial Guinea’s six.
Despite going unbeaten in the group Nigeria were far from impressive in their three games as they scored just three goals, but a solid defence which conceded just once allowed them to grind out results.
After their victory against Guinea-Bissau coach Jose Peseiro said he believes his side “kept our goals for the next round”. Peseiro will be hoping his star striker Victor Osimhen is one of the players to make good on this promise, as the Napoli forward has been misfiring so far with just one goal and five big chances missed.
Cameroon’s confidence is likely to be rather low coming into this game after a poor group stage saw them concede six goals in three games, the fourth most of any team in the competition and the most of any side still remaining in the tournament.
After drawing their opening match and losing their second, Cameroon were in desperate need of a win in their third against bottom of the table Gambia. After conceding a late goal to put them 2-1 down, Cameroon were able to turn the game around and win 3-2 thanks to Christopher Wooh’s stoppage time winner.
The Super Eagles now face up against a familiar foe in Cameroon, and Nigeria have had the much better time in these meetings in recent years. Of the last six meetings between these two sides Nigeria have lost just once and won three in this time, while Cameroon have only won once in normal time in the previous nine meetings.
Bet9ja Tips
This game is sure to be a tough fixture between two of the continent’s best sides who have so far failed to disappoint at this year’s AFCON.
Nigeria’s faltering attack will be up against a leaky Cameroon defence and so we believe this game could be the turning point in the Super Eagles fortunes in forward areas. For this reason we believe Osimhen will get his second goal of the tournament, you can get odds of this to happen anytime of 2.60 with Bet9ja.
With Nigeria coming into this game so far unbeaten, while they have also lost just once in their last 11 across all competitions, we expect them to run out victorious at the end of this one. You can get odds of Nigeria to win of 2.14 with Bet9ja.
Bet9ja Odds (at time of writing, 90 minutes only): Nigeria win: 2.14, Draw: 3.00, Cameroon win: 4.10
