The winter months are some of the busiest when it comes to the footballing schedule around the globe, and this applies to today as well which sees a range of games from all across the world.
The Africa Cup of Nations is one of the highlights of the day with the tournament starting to heat up as it reaches the latter stages. Elsewhere, the English Premier League keeps providing us with plenty of drama and today should be no different with a whole host of exciting games set to take place.
Read on as we pick out our top tips and booking codes for today’s upcoming games:
Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal
Arsenal come into this game on the back of a quiet month which has seen them play just two games, with one of these being an impressive 5-0 demolition of Crystal Palace which ended the Gunners’ run of four games without a win. In comparison, Nottingham Forest have played four games this month, meaning Arsenal’s side have had plenty more rest and will be much more refreshed in this game.
Arsenal may have lost the last game they played at the City Ground, but they will be confident of winning this one after their recent performances. Despite going on a three game losing streak prior to their win over Crystal Palace, Arsenal had performed brilliantly and arguably deserved to win all three. They have created an astonishing 10.12 xG in their last five matches while conceding a lowly 4.6 in the same time.
These performances set them in good shape for a victory in this one, and we expect just that to happen.
Arsenal to win, 1.40
Mali vs Burkina Faso
Neither of Mali or Burkina Faso have set AFCON alight so far with their performances, with both seemingly struggling to score goals in their group games. Mali, however, have looked far more defensively stable than their opponents with them conceding just the once in the tournament so far compared to Burkina Faso’s four goals conceded.
Mali’s record against Burkina Faso is another factor that will boost their morale coming into this game, with the Stallions winning eight and losing just one of the 10 encounters between these two sides.
While Burkina Faso may not have put up the performances or have the superior head-to-head record to suggest they will win this game, they have reached at least the semi-finals of the tournament in three of the last five editions. This leaves them with a wealth of experience of qualifying for the later rounds compared to a Mali side who have not made it past the round of 16 in the last four AFCON’s.
For this reason, we are backing Burkina Faso to create another shock upset result in this year’s AFCON and qualify to the quarter-finals with a victory.
Burkina Faso to win, 4.15 (90 minutes only)
Morocco vs South Africa
The final game of this year’s AFCON round of 16 sees South Africa take on the competition’s favourites in Morocco with the winner booking themselves a place in the quarter-final tie against Cape Verde.
Morocco flew out of the blocks in their opening game with a 3-0 victory, before faltering to a 1-1 draw with DR Congo and narrowly beating Zambia 1-0. South Africa fell to a 2-0 victory in their first game with Mali, but bounced back with a fantastic 4-0 win before securing their place in the knockouts with a draw against Tunisia on the final day.
While South Africa are sure to put up a strong defensive performance in this one, Morocco’s overwhelming quality is far superior to that of their opponents. For this reason, we expect Morocco to win this one fairly comfortably in the end.
Morocco to win, 1.56 (90 minutes only)
