This year’s edition of the Africa Cup of Nations has finally reached it’s pinnacle as the final is set to take place on Sunday evening.
The tournament has thrown up an excess of drama throughout and we are sure the final will be more of the same. After initially starting the tournament together in Group A, Nigeria and Ivory Coast are now getting ready to meet each other once again in the final.

Nigeria vs Ivory Coast
Sunday 11 February, 21:00
Stade Robert Champroux
Nigeria came into AFCON as outside favourites to go on and win the tournament, but this quickly changed thanks to early exits from some of the top sides. Algeria and Tunisia being knocked out in the group stage, and Egypt, Morocco and Senegal all exiting in early knockout rounds quickly saw Nigeria become the highest ranked side left in the competition, making them favourites to go on and win.
Despite Nigeria being perceived as favourites, they have played far below expectations prior to the tournament. With their huge attacking talent many thought they would try and outscore their opponents, but the story has been much the opposite. The Super Eagles have scored just seven times in their six games so far leaving their defence as the star of the show, conceding just twice in their run to the final.
Nigeria will take confidence from this defensive solidarity coming into the final, as well as the knowledge that they have bested this Ivory Coast side once already. A 1-0 victory over the host nation in the second game of the tournament saw the Super Eagles change system to a back three for the first time, a system that has stuck with them since that point onwards.
However, a lot has changed since the group stage and the Ivory Coast may now be better prepared for Nigeria’s new system.
The Ivory Coast had an abysmal group stage, winning their first game before falling to defeat against Nigeria and culminating in a 4-0 humiliation to Equatorial Guinea. This looked bound to be the end of the hosts’ tournament with them even firing manager Jean-Louis Gasset, but they managed to scrape through thanks to being one of the best third-place finishers.
Emerse Fae was placed in charge for the remainder of the competition and he has managed to propel his side, along with the immense support they have received, into winning their three knockout games and reaching the final.
The Elephants have had to extra-time on two occasions on their run, beating Senegal on penalties in the round of 16 and beating Mali thanks to a 122nd minute winner in the quarter-finals. Nigeria, in comparison, have had to go to extra time on just a single occasion with this coming in their penalty victory against South Africa in their previous game. This could leave Nigeria’s players less fatigued than their opponents if the game is to go all the way, but the backing of the home crowd is sure to help the Ivory Coast players push all the way.
Bet9ja Tips
We expect this game to be an extremely tough affair between two top sides who will be desperate to get their hands back on the AFCON trophy.
A win for Nigeria would see them win the tournament for the first time since 2013 and would become their fourth victory of the AFCON trophy. A win for the Ivory Coast would be their first win since 2015 and would see them move level with Nigeria with three AFCON trophies.
While the home crowd will do their best to help push the Ivory Coast over the finish line, we believe that Nigeria’s attacking quality combined with their defensive stability throughout the tournament will be enough for the Super Eagles to come out as Champions. You can get odds of Nigeria to win of 2.70 with Bet9ja.
Victor Osimhen may not have scored since his opening goal in the first game of the competition, but the Napoli forward has proved he is the man for big occasions in recent years. For this reason, we believe Osimhen will get on the scoresheet in this one and you can get odds of him to score anytime of 3.50 with Bet9ja.
Bet9ja Odds (at time of writing, 90 minutes only): Nigeria win: 2.70, Draw: 2.87, Ivory Coast win: 3.10
