It was announced on Monday that Roy Hodgson has left Crystal Palace with immediate effect.
The 76-year-old was taken ill on the weekend and decided to step aside for The Eagles to appoint a long term manager.
And that man is 49-year-old Austrian Oliver Glasner.
With Glasner not well known to the English Premier League fanbase, we take a deeper look at what the Austrian boss can bring to Selhurst Park.
Palace have had a tough 2023/24 campaign so far, as they sit 15th place in the English top flight and are just five points adrift of the relegation zone.
The recent form of The Eagles has been particularly poor, as they have now won just twice out of their last 16 games in all competitions so the faithful will hope that this can change under Glasner.
Details of the appointment
The Austrian boss has been appointed as Eagles manager after Roy Hodgson stepped down from his role at the club, managing 200 games across six years.
Glasner has signed a deal at Selhurst Park until the end of the 2025/26 season, so it is exciting times ahead at the club as he will have time to implement his own tactics and bring some new personnel in the door to suit his style of play.
Previous management
Glasner managed Eintracht Frankfurt to UEFA Europa League success in the 2021/22 campaign, which was his first season in charge at the club and the German outfit’s first continental trophy in over 40 years.
Before this, the 49-year-old spent two seasons in charge of Bundesliga outfit Vfl Wolfsburg, where he earned the clubs third-highest points tally in their history and helped them qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Style of play
Glasner is known for his attacking style of play, which will certainly excite the Palace faithful as they have the fourth worst attacking record in the Premier League, with just three sides scoring less than their 28 league goals this term.
Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze are by far the standout performers that are currently at the club, so the attacking style of play that Glasner will look to imply will hopefully help the two talented players reach their full potential in the remainder of the season and keep The Eagles in the top flight. With three centre-backs and wing-backs Glasner’s preferred structure, Palace will be certain to play a more front-foot style of play and he could be the man to take them on another level, after years of mediocrity.
