France’s quest for a third European Championship trophy heads to Euro 2024 this summer.
After a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign that saw Les Bleus crash out on penalties to Switzerland in the last 16 and World Cup heartbreak at the hands of Argentina in the final in Qatar in 2022, Didier Deschamps will be hoping his French side can pick themselves up and go all the way in Germany.
As usual, they are among the favourites to win Euro 2024, just behind England in the outright market. With the firepower of Kylian Mbappé, the versatility of Antoine Griezmann, and a host of up-and-coming talents, they are expected to go far in the competition and you wouldn’t go against them equalling Italy and Germany’s record as the most successful countries in the competition’s history with three European Championship trophies to their name.

France’s Route to the Euro 2024 Final in Berlin
France’s group stage fixtures include matches against Austria on 17 June, the Netherlands on 21 June, and Poland on 25 June. If France win Group D, they will face the runner-up from Group F in the last 16, likely to be Turkey, Portugal, or the Czech Republic. A quarter-final clash with Belgium or a third-place side from Groups A, B, C, or D could follow. Should they reach the semi-finals, a showdown with England is on the cards, and a final against Germany or Spain is possible.
France’s Key Players
Kylian Mbappé
Mbappé is France’s top contender for the Golden Boot, having been directly involved in over 450 goals for club and country. He broke the record for the most goals scored in men’s World Cup finals with a hat-trick against Argentina in Qatar. Mbappé has just secured a record-breaking sixth consecutive Ligue 1 Golden Boot with 27 goals in 29 games.
Antoine Griezmann
Griezmann, who created more chances than any other player at the 2022 World Cup, is central to France’s attacking play. Despite playing up front for Atletico Madrid, he excels in the number 10 role for France. At the World Cup, he topped the stats for passes into the box and chances created, while also setting a world record for the most consecutive international appearances (84).
Eduardo Camavinga
Camavinga’s versatility makes him a crucial member of the squad. His ability to play across the midfield and at left-back if needed allows Deschamps to adapt tactics during matches. The Real Madrid midfielder made 76 tackles in La Liga this season and committed the most fouls for his club, earning him nine yellow cards.
Warren Zaïre-Emery
At just 18, Zaïre-Emery has made a significant impact for PSG and the national team. He is the youngest goalscorer in PSG’s history and has been directly involved in numerous goals in the Champions League. He received his first senior call-up in November and scored in the 14-0 rout of Gibraltar.
France’s Tactical Analysis and Formation
Deschamps favours a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Tchouaméni linking defence to attack and Camavinga playing a box-to-box role. Pavard and Koundé will battle for the right-back spot, allowing Theo Hernandez to operate freely on the left. Up front, Giroud’s ability to hold up the ball and bring others into play is crucial, with Griezmann providing creativity in the number 10 role. Ousmane Dembélé is expected to start on the right wing.
