With the introduction of the revamped format for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, the increased number of matches has led UEFA to make a significant scheduling change. To accommodate the increased fixture list, all three UEFA competitions will be given one exclusive match week where no matches from the other two competitions will take place.
As a result, this week the Champions League will see games played on Thursday, breaking away from the traditional Tuesday and Wednesday schedule. With six games set to take place, we are going to take a closer look at a selection of these matches and pick out our top tips and best booking code (odds at time of writing):
Feyenoord vs Bayer Leverkusen
Following his stupendous first season at Bayer Leverkusen last year, where he scored 21 goals and assisted nine in 34 appearances, Victor Boniface appears to have picked up where he left off at the beginning of this campaign.
After four matches across all competitions, Boniface has netted three times and assisted one more, including two goals and an assist in his last appearance against Hoffenheim at the weekend.
The Nigerian striker is likely to start upfront once again for Xabi Alonso’s men here, and with Boniface in such good form in front of goal, we expect the striker to get on the scoresheet here.
Victor Boniface to score anytime, 2.40
Atalanta vs Arsenal
Another Nigerian superstar that is enjoying their time in Europe is Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, who has started his third year with the Italian club in fantastic fashion.
Coming off the back of 32 goals and 15 assists in his first two seasons, including scoring a hat-trick in last year’s Europa League Final, Lookman has already netted once and assisted once in his opening two games this year.
His performance in Atalanta’s most recent match against Fiorentina is sure to earn him a place in the starting side against Arsenal, and with the tricky forward full of confidence, we expect him to cause Arsenal plenty of problems.
Ademola Lookman to score anytime, 3.75
Monaco vs Barcelona
Barcelona may have been viewed as underdogs to Real Madrid in both La Liga and the Champions League after their rivals added Kylian Mbappe to their already star-studded squad in the summer, but Barcelona have certainly shown they will go down with a fight at the beginning of this campaign.
Hansi Flick’s side have won all of their first five matches with an aggregate score of 17-4, leaving them with huge confidence heading into their match against Monaco.
While the French side are unbeaten in their own first four matches of the term, three wins and a draw, we believe that Barcelona’s overwhelming quality will prove too much for the hosts with an eventual away win on Thursday.
Barcelona to win, 1.78
Atletico Madrid vs Leipzig
Another highly intriguing game that is the perfect example of why UEFA changed the format of the Champions League sees Atletico Madrid host RB Leipzig on Thursday.
The hosts remain unbeaten in their opening five matches, winning three and drawing two, and come into this game having kept a clean sheet in all of their past four outings, last conceding twice on the opening day against Villarreal.
Leipzig have also had a strong start to the campaign, winning four and drawing one across all competitions, suggesting Thursday’s encounter could be extremely close between two teams in form.
However, Diego Simeone’s men have historically been extremely hard to beat at home, especially in Europe, with their last home defeat coming against Liverpool in 2021/22. Because of this record, we believe the Spaniards will narrowly take all three points from their first Champions League fixture of the season.
Atletico Madrid to win by 1 goal, 3.30
