The Super Eagles came together in style to honour one of their own, as Ademola Lookman was celebrated for winning the 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year award back in December — and the moment brought nothing but good vibes to camp.
On the eve of Nigeria’s crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Uyo, the Atalanta forward was presented with a cake by his teammates and coaching staff, inscribed with the title “King of Africa.” The moment, shared widely on social media, captured the unity and joy among the squad as they rallied around the Atalanta star.

Lookman’s brilliant form for club and country was capped off with his hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final for Atalanta — securing the Italian club’s first-ever European trophy. That performance, along with his key role in Nigeria’s run to the 2024 AFCON final, made him a worthy successor to Victor Osimhen, who claimed the CAF honour in 2023.
And it was Osimhen himself who delivered a powerful tribute during the dinner:
“First of all, we all know Lookman deserves this. He has been amazing for both his club and also for the Super Eagles. It’s a great privilege that this award came to Nigeria and went to the most deserved person. I am proud of you, Ademola Lookman.”
“We speak in private a lot of times, and I told you how proud I am that you chose to represent Nigeria. Your hard work and dedication show you deserve to be the African Best.”
As the Super Eagles prepare to take on Zimbabwe this afternoon in a must-win clash in Uyo, spirits couldn’t be higher in camp. And with the “King of Africa” in their ranks, Nigeria will be hopeful of continuing their resurgence under Éric Chelle.
