The UEFA Champions League is a competition that has served up goals over the years, especially since last year’s revamp, which included more teams and a new league phase.

There are some big matches this week, and we expect excellent attacking play, and most importantly, goals.

Here are our top five goalscorer picks for this week.

Vangelis Pavlidis vs Qarabag

Benfica have started the season in impressive fashion, as they are unbeaten in nine matches across all competitions. They made light work of tricky Champions League qualifiers against both Nice and Fenerbahce to reach the league stage, without conceding a goal. Those results and performances should fill them with confidence ahead of their opener against Qarabag.

Our goalscorer pick is Benfica’s star man, Vangelis Pavlidis. He scored 30 goals last season and was on target in the weekend’s 1-1 draw against Santa Clara.

Pavlidis to score anytime @1.75

Erling Haaland vs Napoli

Manchester City are by no means favourites to defeat Antonio Conte’s Napoli in this crucial Champions League clash. Thankfully, our main concern is goals, and while we expect a close game, both sides have shown they can score goals this season.

City dismantled rivals Manchester United at the weekend, with Erling Haaland scoring a brace, and he really should have had at least two more goals. The return of Kevin De Bruyne to the Etihad should add some intrigue, but our pick to score is Haaland. The Norwegian has five goals in four games this season and should keep that form going.

Haaland to score anytime @1.95

Kylian Mbappe vs Marseille

Mbappe is arguably the hottest player in Europe at the moment and a value bet to score anytime in this Champions League clash. The France captain has followed up his 44-goal haul from last season with four goals in four games already this term.

Real Madrid have won all four matches this term, and Xabi Alonso’s side are finding goals easy to come by as well. They are top of La Liga with a 100% record, scoring at least two goals in each of their last three fixtures. Marseille have never beaten Real Madrid in four attempts, and we expect that trend to continue.

Raphinha vs Newcastle

Newcastle are back in the Champions League after a season’s absence and have been handed their biggest task for their tournament opener, hosting the reigning Spanish champions, Barcelona.

Hansi Flick’s men have started the season in fine form (W3, D1) and are in electric form after a 6-0 thumping of Valencia at the weekend.

Raphinha came off the bench at half-time and scored a brace in that win, and in the absence of the injured Lamine Yamal, we expect the Brazilian to be a source of goals at St. James’ Park.

Raphinha to score anytime @3.25

Luis Suarez vs Kairat Almaty

After winning the Portuguese league title in fine fashion last season, Sporting have started the new campaign in emphatic style, with four wins from their opening five games. They open their Champions League phase with a home game against Kazakhstan debutants Kairat Almaty, who become the second team ever from their country to reach this stage after Astana in 2015.

Kairat have kept four clean sheets in their last four games, so this could be a low-scoring affair. However, Sporting should have enough to win, and we are backing Luis Suarez to score anytime. He has three goals in five starts for Sporting and scored four times for Colombia during the international break.

Suarez to score anytime @1.65
