UEFA Champions League Matchday 4: Big Talking Points & Full Fixture List

The Champions League returns this week with a blockbuster Matchday 4.

We’ve got two modern classics back on the menu – Liverpool vs Real Madrid and PSG vs Bayern Munich – both fixtures that have been recent Champions League finals. Add in some other tasty ties and this round looks set to be a big one.

Here are the biggest storylines to watch out for this week:

Liverpool vs Real Madrid – Familiar foes, new faces
Tuesday 4 Nov – 21:00 k.o

There are few rivalries in modern European football as compelling as Liverpool and Real Madrid. After years of painful defeats, the Reds finally ended their hoodoo against Los Blancos with a 2-0 win last season – but now they face a rejuvenated Real side under Xabi Alonso.

Liverpool have rediscovered some rhythm under Arne Slot after a poor domestic run, but inconsistency remains their biggest concern. Mohamed Salah sits just two goals away from becoming the first African to score 50 in the Champions League, and Anfield will need another famous European night if the hosts are to stop a Real team that have won 13 of their last 14 matches.

For Alonso, this is a homecoming with a twist. His Madrid are clinical, organised, and built around Jude Bellingham, who could become the youngest player in history to reach 50 Champions League appearances.

PSG vs Bayern Munich – The champions face their biggest test
Tuesday 4 Nov – 21:00 k.o

A rerun of the 2020 final, this clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich brings together two of the five teams still perfect in this season’s competition.

Luis Enrique’s side sit top of their group with nine points and an unbeaten home record stretching back years in Europe. With Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia all fit again, PSG are starting to look like genuine contenders to retain their crown.

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern, meanwhile, have won 15 matches in a row across all competitions. Harry Kane already has 11 goals in his last 10 UCL appearances and thrives in these elite occasions, while Joshua Kimmich could make his 100th appearance for the Bavarians.

Something has to give between two attacking juggernauts with everything to prove.

Club Brugge vs Barcelona – Tricky trip for the Catalans
Wednesday 5 Nov – 21:00 k.o

Barcelona travel to Belgium knowing that Club Brugge are no pushovers. The Belgian champions have lost just one of their last 18 home matches in UEFA competition and have beaten Monaco and Rangers convincingly this season.

Xavi’s side were dominant in their 6-1 win over Olympiakos but fragile defensively in defeat to PSG. With several key players missing, including Gavi and Lewandowski, Barça will need their young stars like Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí to step up if they want to maintain their strong away form in the league phase.

Man City vs Borussia Dortmund – Haaland reunion at the Etihad
Wednesday 5 Nov – 21:00 k.o

Erling Haaland faces his old club once again, having already scored the winner when these two met in 2022. Manchester City have been relentless at home against German opposition, winning their last 11 in Manchester, and Pep Guardiola’s side are beginning to click into gear.

Bernardo Silva could hit a century of Champions League appearances, while Haaland continues to chase records with 37 goals in 33 group-stage appearances.

Dortmund, though, are dangerous. They’ve scored four goals in three consecutive UCL games for the first time in their history and come into this one with confidence. This could be one of the most open ties of the week.

Newcastle United vs Athletic Club – Fortress St James’ tested
Wednesday 5 Nov – 21:00 k.o

It’s been a season of highs and lows for Newcastle, but their European nights at St James’ Park remain special. The Magpies have won 22 of their last 33 home matches in Europe and are unbeaten in their last four on Tyneside.

Eddie Howe’s side know victory over Athletic Club would put them firmly in the driving seat for a top-eight finish, with Anthony Gordon chasing a record fourth straight UCL goal for the club.

Athletic, meanwhile, are without star forward Iñaki Williams and have only one win in nine away games against English sides. But with Nico Williams in form, they won’t go down without a fight.

The player cashed out before that particular match ended to win the N28M – initially they would have won N49.4M. Hope that clears up any confusion.
