Major Upheaval at Crystal Palace: Glasner Announces Exit as Guehi Nears City Move

Crystal Palace have been hit with a double blow after head coach Oliver Glasner confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season, while captain Marc Guehi edges closer to a move to Manchester City.

Speaking at a press conference today, Glasner revealed that his decision to depart Selhurst Park was made months ago, following talks with chairman Steve Parish during the October international break. The Austrian coach, who led Palace to their first-ever major trophy with last season’s FA Cup triumph, said he informed the club he would not sign a new contract and felt it was the right moment to seek a new challenge.

“I told Steve in October that I would not sign a new contract,” Glasner said. “We agreed it was best to keep it confidential for a period, but now it’s important to have clarity. I’m looking for a new challenge. It has nothing to do with the transfer window.”

In the same press conference, Glasner confirmed that Guehi would not be involved in Palace’s squad to face Sunderland, with the England defender now expected to complete a £20m move to Manchester City.

Guehi, who has six months remaining on his Palace contract, has been a long-term target for several top clubs and was close to joining Liverpool last summer. However, City moved quickly this month following defensive injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, accelerating talks that reached an agreement in principle on Thursday night.

While personal terms are yet to be finalised, they are not expected to be an issue, with City ready to offer Guehi a long-term deal.

“It looks like it happens now,” Glasner admitted. “Everybody wants Marc to stay forever, but the reality is different. When a player wants to move and the price is met, a deal happens.”

Guehi has been central to Palace’s recent success, captaining the side to FA Cup glory and establishing himself as a regular for England. Glasner praised the defender’s professionalism throughout months of speculation and confirmed the pair spoke privately at the training ground on Friday morning.

Palace have already begun the process of identifying Glasner’s successor, with the club now facing a significant rebuild ahead of next season.

For City, Guehi’s arrival would provide immediate depth and Premier League-proven quality as Pep Guardiola’s side continue to juggle domestic and European commitments.
