The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches its final, unforgiving stage this week, with the last remaining places to be decided across Europe and the inter-confederation play-offs.
There is no safety net now. No second legs. No room for error.
Across the next few days, some of football’s biggest nations and emerging challengers will fight for survival, knowing that one result stands between them and the biggest stage in world football. For some, it’s the chance to complete the journey. For others, it’s the risk of watching the World Cup from home.
The last chance! ?

How the European Play-Offs Work
In Europe, 16 teams are battling for four remaining World Cup spots.
The format is simple but brutal. Four separate paths, each consisting of a semi-final and a final, both played as single-leg knockout matches.
Path A
Wales vs Bosnia and Herzegovina
Wales come into this full of confidence after a 7-1 demolition of North Macedonia, with Craig Bellamy’s side playing a far more attacking style. With Harry Wilson back fit and home advantage in Cardiff, they look well placed to progress.
Bosnia, on the other hand, have been inconsistent. They dropped points in games they should have won during qualifying and don’t carry the same attacking threat.
Italy vs Northern Ireland
Italy find themselves in another playoff battle after missing the last two World Cups, and the pressure is firmly on. Despite winning six of their qualifiers, a heavy defeat to Norway exposed their weaknesses.
Northern Ireland have competed well, but away from home and with key injuries, this is a huge ask. Italy should have enough, but nothing is guaranteed with the Azzurri anymore.
Path B
Ukraine vs Sweden
Ukraine have been solid throughout qualifying, with their only real struggles coming against a strong France side. They’ve proven they can deliver in high-pressure playoff games before.
Sweden, meanwhile, arrive in poor form and without key man Alexander Isak. Even with Graham Potter now in charge, they look vulnerable.
Poland vs Albania
Poland are favourites but far from convincing. They’ve relied heavily on late goals and moments from Robert Lewandowski rather than dominant performances.
Albania are disciplined and difficult to break down, and could frustrate the hosts. This one feels tighter than the odds suggest.
Path C
Türkiye vs Romania
Turkey have been one of the most impressive sides in qualifying, even taking points off Spain. With attacking talents like Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz, they carry serious threat.
Romania’s numbers are inflated by games against weaker opposition, and this is a major step up.
Slovakia vs Kosovo
Slovakia are strong favourites at home, but Kosovo’s wins over Sweden show they can be dangerous.
The concern for Kosovo is goals. They’ve struggled in attack, and against a disciplined Slovakia side, chances could be limited.
Path D
Czech Republic vs Republic of Ireland
Ireland come in with momentum after a strong finish to qualifying, including a huge win over Portugal.
The Czech Republic have been inconsistent, and results like their defeat to the Faroe Islands suggest vulnerability. Ireland will fancy their chances.
Denmark vs North Macedonia
Denmark should be too strong here, but they’ve shown signs of inconsistency.
North Macedonia have shocked bigger teams before, but after a heavy defeat to Wales, it’s hard to see another upset.

Inter-confederation Play-Off: Last Chance to Reach the World Cup
Away from Europe, six teams are battling for the final two spots in a high-stakes mini tournament in Mexico.
Semi-finals:
– New Caledonia vs Jamaica
– Bolivia vs Suriname
Finals:
– DR Congo vs (New Caledonia/Jamaica)
– Iraq vs (Bolivia/Suriname)
The format is ruthless. Single-leg ties, no margin for error.
DR Congo and Iraq already await in the finals, meaning they are just one win away from qualification.
Nigeria Miss Out After FIFA Decision
There’s extra frustration for Nigerian fans watching this unfold.
The Super Eagles had appealed to FIFA following their play-off defeat to DR Congo, citing eligibility concerns over several players.
However, FIFA rejected the appeal, confirming DR Congo’s place in the intercontinental tournament. The NFF says it will appeal FIFA’s decision to reject its allegation, but the chances of it being successful seem slimmer by the day
