The race for Europe in the Premier League has taken a wild turn this season, and thanks to UEFA’s new rules and multiple English clubs still competing in Europe, there is a very real chance that up to 10 teams could qualify for continental football next season.
It sounds complicated – and it is – but here’s a clear breakdown of how it could happen.
Why There Are More European Spots This Season
The key factor is UEFA’s new European Performance Spot (EPS) system.
This awards an extra Champions League place to the leagues with the best performance in Europe across the season. The Premier League has already secured one of these spots, meaning:
- Top 5 qualify for the Champions League
- 6th goes to the Europa League
- 7th goes to the Conference League
That’s already seven teams guaranteed in Europe before anything else is factored in.
But things don’t stop there.

How Cup Winners Change Everything
European qualification is heavily influenced by cup competitions – both domestic and European.
If Manchester City Win the FA Cup
If a team like Manchester City win the FA Cup and also finish in the top positions, their Europa League spot gets passed down the table.
That means:
- European places shift further down the league
- 8th place can qualify for Europe
This is one of the simplest ways the number increases.
The Big Game-Changer: Europa League Winners
This is where things really open up.
If either Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest win the Europa League, they automatically qualify for the Champions League.
Now, depending on where they finish in the league:
- If they finish outside the top 5, they add an extra Champions League spot
- This can take England to six teams in the Champions League
If that happens alongside standard league qualification, the total number of European teams increases again.
Sixth place – currently Chelsea – will qualify for gets UCL if Villa win the UEL and finish fifth in the PL.
Forest are currently far outside the European places domestically, so if they win the Europa League, they would add an extra team into Europe rather than reshuffle existing spots. Much like Tottenham did last season.
Conference League Scenario: Crystal Palace
Another key factor is Crystal Palace.
If Palace win the UEFA Conference League:
- They qualify for the Europa League
- If they finish outside the European places domestically, they add another team to the total
This is how England can push from eight or nine teams… to ten.

So How Do We Get to 10 Teams?
For the Premier League to reach the maximum of 10 teams in Europe, the following needs to happen:
- England already has 7 places (including EPS)
- A team like Forest or Villa wins the Europa League while outside key league positions
- Palace win the Conference League and also finish outside qualification spots
- FA Cup outcomes push league places further down
When all of those line up, the final structure can look like:
- 5 teams in the Champions League
- 2 teams in the Europa League
- 1 team in the Conference League
- +2 additional teams via European trophy wins
Total: 10 Premier League teams in Europe
Why the Table Is So Tight
The reason this is even possible is how close the table currently is, with just three points separating Chelsea in sixth, to Fulham in 12th.
That means:
- Teams as low as 8th or even 9th could still have a realistic shot
- Every result between now and the end of the season carries huge weight
A Season Like No Other
We’ve seen tight title races, relegation battles and top-four fights before… but rarely a European race this open.
With multiple English teams still alive in Europe and domestic places shifting week by week, this could be one of the most chaotic finishes to a Premier League season yet.
And if everything falls into place, history could be made with 10 English teams playing in Europe next season.
