Lionel Messi’s Argentina Career in Numbers

After a rollercoaster 21 years, Lionel Messi’s extraordinary Argentina career is over.

From being sent off less than two minutes into his international debut to eventually lifting the World Cup, Messi’s journey with La Albiceleste produced records that may stand for generations.

Here is Lionel Messi’s Argentina career in numbers.

208 – Argentina Appearances

Messi finishes as Argentina’s most-capped player by an enormous margin.

His 208 appearances put him 61 clear of Javier Mascherano in second place, while only Cristiano Ronaldo has played more men’s international matches.

Messi made his debut as an 18-year-old against Hungary in August 2005. Remarkably, he was sent off less than two minutes after coming on.

More than two decades later, he leaves as an undisputed Argentina legend.

126 – Goals for Argentina

No Argentine has come remotely close to Messi’s goals total.

He finishes with 126 international goals, more than double the 56 scored by second-placed Gabriel Batistuta.

In fact, Messi scored 68 goals after turning 30 alone – which would still be enough to make him Argentina’s record goalscorer.

His final goal fittingly arrived against Benin in his farewell appearance.

98 – Minutes Per Goal or Assist

Perhaps the number that best demonstrates Messi’s incredible consistency.

Across more than two decades of international football, Messi averaged one goal or assist every 98 minutes for Argentina.

His final record stands at 126 goals and 65 assists, an extraordinary level of production sustained across 21 years.

21 – World Cup Goals

Messi leaves with 21 World Cup goals, placing him second on the all-time list behind Kylian Mbappé’s 22.

Even more remarkably, 15 of Messi’s 21 World Cup goals came after his 35th birthday.

Across World Cups and Copa Américas combined, Messi scored 35 major-tournament goals – one more than Diego Maradona scored across his entire Argentina career.

34 – World Cup Appearances

Nobody has played more World Cup matches.

Messi appeared 34 times across six World Cups, seven more than Cristiano Ronaldo.

His journey stretched from a teenage appearance at Germany 2006 all the way to the final in 2026 at the age of 39.

8 – Major Finals

Messi’s Argentina journey wasn’t always filled with celebrations.

Across his 13 World Cups and Copa Américas, Argentina reached eight finals, winning three of them.

There was heartbreak in the 2007, 2015 and 2016 Copa América finals and the 2014 and 2026 World Cup finals.

But there was also glory: the 2021 Copa América, 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América.

That 2022 triumph ensured Messi finally got his hands on football’s biggest prize.

11 – International Hat-Tricks

Messi scored 11 hat-tricks for Argentina.

The final one arrived against Algeria in Argentina’s opening game of the 2026 World Cup, when Messi was just eight days short of turning 39.

His biggest single-game haul was even better: five goals against Estonia in 2022.

46 – Different Countries Scored Against

Messi didn’t just rack up his goals against a handful of opponents.

He scored against 46 different international teams, with Bolivia his favourite opponent.

Messi scored 11 times against Bolivia, while Ecuador and Venezuela were next with seven apiece. Overall, he faced 64 different countries during his Argentina career.

112 – Left-Footed Goals

No surprises here.

Of Messi’s 126 Argentina goals, an incredible 112 were scored with his famous left foot.

Another 12 came with his right and just two were headers. He also scored 28 times from outside the penalty area and 12 direct free-kicks.

188 – Argentina Team-Mates

Messi’s longevity becomes even clearer when you look at the players who shared the pitch with him.

Across his 21-year international career, Messi played alongside 188 different Argentina team-mates.

They spanned generations: from Roberto Abbondanzieri, born in 1972, to Leonel Flores and Franco Mastantuono, both born in 2007. Messi had already played 20 times for Argentina before Mastantuono was even born.

1 – World Cup

And ultimately, this is the number that will define Messi’s Argentina legacy.

After losing the 2014 final to Germany, Messi finally became a World Cup winner in Qatar in 2022. It was the trophy that had eluded him and the achievement that completed an already extraordinary career.

Twenty-one years after his chaotic debut, Messi leaves Argentina as their record appearance maker, record goalscorer and a World Cup-winning captain.

An international career we may never see again.
