1. The Bridesmaids of AFCON
Only Egypt, Cameroon and Ghana have won AFCON more times than Nigeria, yet no country has finished second more often than the Super Eagles. Nigeria have been runners-up on five occasions and have also finished third a record eight times.

Nigeria are joint top with Cameroon for the most Golden Boot winners in AFCON history. A Nigerian player has finished as top or joint-top scorer eight times across different eras.
From Segun Odegbami and Rashidi Yekini to Jay-Jay Okocha, Emmanuel Emenike and Odion Ighalo, goals have never been in short supply when Nigeria step onto the continental stage.
5. Rashidi Yekini Still Stands Among AFCON Royalty
Rashidi Yekini remains AFCON’s third-highest goalscorer of all time with 13 goals, behind only Samuel Eto’o and Laurent Pokou.
He dominated the 1992 and 1994 tournaments, winning the Golden Boot twice and playing a decisive role in Nigeria’s second AFCON title in Tunisia. To this day, no Nigerian striker has come close to matching his AFCON impact.
6. Jay-Jay Okocha Scored AFCON’s 1,000th Goal
In Tunisia 2004, Jay-Jay Okocha etched his name into AFCON folklore by scoring the tournament’s 1,000th goal during Nigeria’s quarter-final win over Cameroon.

7. Stephen Keshi Won AFCON in Two Roles
Stephen Keshi is one of only two people in history to win AFCON both as a player and a head coach.

9. Muda Lawal Played Five AFCONs in a Row
Mudashiru “Muda” Lawal holds a unique AFCON record as the first African player to feature in five consecutive tournaments, appearing from 1976 to 1984.
A key figure in Nigeria’s 1980 triumph, Lawal embodied durability, intelligence and technical quality in midfield, earning legendary status in Super Eagles history.
10. Kanu Played Six AFCONs But Never Won One
Nwankwo Kanu holds the record for the most AFCON appearances by a Nigerian player, featuring in six tournaments between 2000 and 2010.
