The Over/Under market is one of the most popular and straightforward betting markets in football. Unlike traditional bets, where you predict the outcome of a match (win, lose or draw), the Over/Under market allows you to bet on the number of goals you believe will be scored during a game.
In this article, we explain how the Over/Under market works to help you make the best betting decisions.
How the Over/Under Market Works
In an Over/Under bet, the bookmaker will provide a number of options which represent the expected number of total goals in a match, often referred to as the ‘line’. Bettors then place their bets on whether the actual number of goals scored will be over or under this line.
The most common line for football is 2.5 goals, although bookmakers offer various options, for example, Bet9ja offers between 0.5 goals and 6.5 goals.
An example of this bet could be based on the upcoming AFCON qualifier match between Nigeria and Libya. If you believe there will be over 3.5 goals scored throughout the game then you could place your bet accordingly. If the match ends with a scoreline of 3-1, 4-0, 2-2 or any other scoreline that adds up to over 3.5, then your bet would be a winner.
If there was a different match where you expected it to end 0-0, you could place a bet on under 0.5 goals. In this case, for your bet to win, there would have to be no goals scored throughout the entire game. If the match did end goalless, then your bet would again be a winner.
Factors to Consider
When making bets on the Over/Under market, several factors could influence your decision on what line to bet on or whether to go with an over or under bet.
One of the most important factors to regard is the attacking and defensive form of both teams heading into the game. A match between two high-scoring teams with leaky defences might indicate plenty of goals will be scored, but a match between two teams with fantastic defensive records could suggest a low-scoring affair.
Injuries and suspensions could also play a major role on the outcome of a game, such as if an important attacker is missing out as this could reduce the number of goals. On the other hand, if there is a vital defender out with an injury, then this could lead to a weaker defence and more goals scored.
Combined Bets
You can also combine the Over/Under market with the 1X2 market, making for a riskier bet that could earn you higher winnings if you get the right score and result.
For example, if you believe that Nigeria are going to win the game against Libya with a scoreline of 4-0, then you could place a bet on Nigeria to win & over 3.5 goals scored. If Nigeria do win and there is over 3.5 goals scored over the entire game, whether that is 3-2, 3-1, 4-0 or any other score adding to over 3.5 where Nigeria win, then your bet is a winner at odds of 4.10. Whereas an over 3.5 goals bet on it’s own is priced up at 3.70.
