After a third-place finish in the English Premier League in 2022/23, alongside an EFL Cup trophy and making it to the FA Cup Final, hopes were high for Erik ten Hag’s team coming into this campaign with expectations that they would kick on and move one step closer to a potential title race, but that has certainly not been the case.
Instead, Manchester United failed to ever get going in the league and recorded their worst-ever finish since the inception of the Premier League in 1992/93. Ending the campaign in eighth place saw ten Hag’s side go one worse than David Moyes’s seventh place in 2013/14, and a goal difference of -1 is the only time they have finished with a negative goal difference.
Ten Hag was able to somewhat salvage the season in their ultimate game as they secured a phenomenal 2-1 win against Manchester City in the FA Cup Final, lifting his second trophy in two seasons with the club.
Despite that success, many are rightfully displeased with the huge step back the club has taken this year and the performances have been far from ideal throughout the campaign.
Alongside these murmurs of discontent is the fact that there are new people in charge of the footballing side at Old Trafford, and reports have been suggesting that Sir Jim Ratcliffe could be looking for a new manager to join the side.
Many names have been suggested across the footballing world that could take on the Man United job, from Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Frank to Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel, and we’re going to take a look at who the favourites are to become the next Red Devils’ manager with Bet9ja:
Mauricio Pochettino, 2.50 – Bet Here
Despite guiding Chelsea to a fantastic second half of the season, where they lost only three times in the final 20 games across all competitions and climbed to sixth place, securing European football for next season, Pochettino surprisingly departed the club at the end of the campaign.
The Argentine has been linked with the Manchester United job on multiple occasions in recent years, spanning all the way back to his time at Tottenham Hotspur, and now could be the perfect time to finally make the move a reality.
Pochettino’s teams have always had an emphasis on fluid attacking play, something that Manchester United have been known for but lacked in recent years, and we believe this could be the perfect move for both club and manager.
Thomas Tuchel, 3.25 – Bet Here
Thomas Tuchel is the second candidate we believe would be a major success in Manchester, with plenty of experience of winning and managing at the biggest clubs around Europe.
Tuchel has already proved that he can pull off wonders with an English club after he brilliantly won the Champions League with a Chelsea team that were far from the best team in Europe at the time, only proven by their struggles in recent seasons.
The German also has plenty of experience at some of the top clubs around the continent and working with the very best players and biggest egos, from working at Paris Saint-Germain with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar to Bayern Munich with Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala as well as time spent at Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.
These experiences certainly leave Tuchel in a good position to take charge of Man United, and we believe he would be a brilliant choice to take the club forward.
