The UEFA Champions League roars this week with round five of the league phase already promising another thrilling chapter in Europe’s elite club competition.
As the race for knockout-stage qualification intensifies, the spotlight shifts to a selection of pivotal clashes on Wednesday that could make or break campaigns.
We take a closer look at a selection of Wednesday’s UCL fixtures and picking out our top tips and best booking code (odds at time of writing):
Monaco vs Benfica
Monaco have made a superb start to the 2024/25 Champions League, sitting third in the table having won three and drawn one of their four matches, including a historic 2-1 victory over Barcelona.
Benfica, on the other hand, are 19th having won two and drawn two, though they have recorded a phenomenal 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in that time.
While Benfica have shown they are capable of big victories, the Portuguese side recorded that win at home, and with Monaco being so strong in both league and European football this season, expect the hosts to win here.
Monaco to win, 2.37
Bologna vs Lille
Jonathan David has consistently scored goals throughout his career, including 26 in each of the last two seasons for Lille, and the striker has continued that fine goalscoring form in the opening stages of this season.
David has already netted 13 times in 20 appearances, as well as two assists, including four in the first four league phase matches, with two coming in the victory against Atletico Madrid.
With the striker in such fine form heading into this game against a Bologna side that are yet to score and have conceded five in four matches, we expect David to get his goal here.
Jonathan David to score anytime, 2.85
Aston Villa vs Juventus
Aston Villa may have made a mostly positive start to the Champions League, sitting eighth in the table having won three and lost one, but their form has been awful in recent weeks, leaving them low on confidence heading into this one.
The hosts have failed to win any of their last six across all competitions, four losses and two draws, including a shock defeat to Club Brugge for a bizarre penalty awarded against Tyrone Mings.
Juventus are coming into this one sat 11th in the table with two wins, one draw and one loss, while they have been extremely inconsistent in recent matches across all competitions, winning just two of their last seven with four draws and one loss.
Despite Aston Villa’s poor form, they have defeated both Bologna and Bayern Munich at home in the Champions League this season, without conceding, they are favourites to return to winning ways.
Aston Villa to win, 2.35
Liverpool vs Real Madrid
In undoubtedly the blockbuster match of the day, Liverpool are set to host reigning champions Real Madrid at Anfield Stadium.
Liverpool remain the only side to have won all of their Champions League fixtures, leaving them top of the table with 12 points and a goal difference of nine, having scored 10 and conceded just one.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, have struggled to get going in the opening stages of this competition, sitting 18th in the table with two wins and two losses, defeating Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund but losing to Lille and AC Milan.
Those results will leave the visitors desperate to secure all three points against a potential rival for the trophy this season, but with the hosts looking so strong across all competitions this season, losing just one of their 18 matches, we believe Liverpool will win tonight.
Liverpool to win, 1.74
