Euro 2024 begins next week, and we take a closer look at some of the key players from the tournament who could have a major impact, today being Alvaro Morata.
The Spanish forward had an impressive 2023/24 season for Atletico Madrid in La Liga and is likely to lead the line for his nation at the upcoming tournament.
Check out the first of our Ones To Watch for Euro 2024, where we looked at Jude Bellingham.
Player Profile
Alvaro Morata
Overall Spain stats: 71 caps / 34 goals
2023/24 Club stats: 48 games / 21 goals
2023/24 honours: 2023 UEFA Nations League
Experience
Morata is a key player for Spain as they head into the Euro Championships, he is the most capped man in the squad, so will provide valuable experience to the younger players.
The current Spain squad has a haul of talented young players, no more so than Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, who can learn on the international stage from experienced players such as Morata.
Lack of attacking options
Since the days of David Villa and Fernando Torres, Morata has been one of the only high quality out and out strikers for Spain, and this trend has continued which makes the 31-year-old key if they want to succeed.
The only other natural striker that Luis de La Fuente has named in the squad is Joselu, and he found regular first-team minutes hard to come by in the 2023/24 campaign.
Goals in big games
Morata has a proven record of scoring goals in big games, he has scored the most goals (6) in Euro Championships out of any Spanish player ever.
The Spanish squad has some excellent talent, such as Rodri, Pedri and Marcus Llorente, but there is a significant lack of goals apart from Morata, who will need to step up in the big games like he has done in previous years.
