Player Profile

Federico Chiesa

  • Overall Italy stats: 47 caps / 7 goals
  • 2023/24 Club stats: 37 games / 10 goals
  • 2023/24 Club honours: Coppa Italia

Tournament Experience

Chiesa is one of just 10 players from the Italy squad that went all the way three years ago to be named in the provisional squad ahead of EURO 2024. The only other attacker who featured in that tournament was Giacomo Raspadori, in a 15-minute substitute appearance.

This leaves Chiesa as one of the most experienced players across the entire squad, despite being just 26-years-old. Italy will be relying on the attacker to help gel the team in their attempt to defend their trophy.

Important Goals

The forward has scored some crucial goals for his national team, including two in Italy’s 5-2 win over North Macedonia in their EURO qualifiers — a result that was vital in securing their place in the tournament — and goals in their round of 16 and semi-final victories in EURO 2021.

Luciano Spalletti’s side has plenty of fantastic goal-scorers, from Gianluca Scamacca to Mateo Retegui, but with so little experience in major tournaments, they will need Chiesa to step up with goals when needed.

Perfect Strike Partner

Scamacca is expected to lead the line for Italy in this tournament after a successful season with Atalanta, scoring 19 times as they secured fourth in the league and won the UEFA Europa League. His strike partnership with Ademola Lookman at club level has been extremely fruitful for both players, with the Super Eagles star scoring all three goals in the Europa League Final against Bayer Leverkusen. Chiesa could be the perfect man to replicate that role for the national side.

Similarly to Lookman, Chiesa prefers to operate from wide areas, whether he starts through the middle or on the wing. He often picks up positions that Scamacca will be familiar with thanks to his connection with Lookman, meaning this partnership could be vital in Italy’s tournament.
