African football has been thrown into fresh controversy this week, with two major off-pitch decisions dominating headlines.
On the same day CAF stunned fans by overturning Senegal’s AFCON final victory and awarding the 2025 title to Morocco, FIFA have rejected Nigeria’s appeal over their World Cup play-off defeat to DR Congo.
With Senegal set to challenge CAF’s ruling, and Nigeria now taking their own case further, the debate around governance in African football is only intensifying.

FIFA Dismiss Nigeria’s Protest
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has officially rejected Nigeria’s protest regarding DR Congo’s use of players in their World Cup qualifying play-off clash.
That match, played in Rabat, ended 1-1 after extra time before DR Congo secured a 4-3 win on penalties to progress to the intercontinental play-off stage.
Nigeria’s complaint centred on the eligibility of several Congolese players. The Nigeria Football Federation argued that some players had not properly renounced their European nationalities, which they claim conflicts with DR Congo’s domestic laws on dual citizenship.
However, FIFA’s position was straightforward.
Under FIFA regulations, a player is eligible to represent a country if they hold a valid passport for that nation. All players in question met that requirement, and on that basis, the protest was dismissed.
NFF Respond and Prepare Appeal
The Nigeria Football Federation have confirmed they are not satisfied with the ruling and will take the case further.
General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi stated that the NFF has already begun the appeals process, with the case expected to be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Nigeria maintain that FIFA may have been misled in granting eligibility clearance, but overturning the decision will now require a successful appeal at CAS.
With DR Congo already scheduled to compete in the intercontinental play-offs later this month, time is a major factor.
DR Congo Move Closer to World Cup
While Nigeria pursue their appeal, DR Congo’s focus remains firmly on the pitch.
Their penalty shootout victory has put them one step away from the 2026 World Cup, with a play-off clash against the winner of New Caledonia vs Jamaica set to decide their fate.
Victory there would secure a place at the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
AFCON Controversy Adds to the Tension
The timing of FIFA’s decision has only added fuel to an already heated moment in African football.
CAF’s decision to award AFCON 2025 to Morocco after Senegal had won the final has triggered widespread reaction across the world, with Senegal expected to appeal the ruling.
Now, with Nigeria’s protest also dismissed, attention is increasingly turning towards how major decisions are being handled off the pitch.
For fans, it raises familiar questions about consistency, transparency, and the balance between regulations and sporting outcomes.
