As the Super Eagles begin a new era under Malian tactician Eric Chelle, a wealth of untapped Nigerian talent continues to emerge across Europe’s top leagues.
Chelle is set to take charge of his first games as Nigeria’s head coach next month, leading the team into crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. With just two points from their opening two qualifiers, the Super Eagles need to ensure they get back on track for a place at next summers World Cup.
The new manager has already faced a setback after Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy declined an invitation to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria. In light of this, Chelle may turn to other eligible players to bolster his squad, and here are five players who could receive their first call-ups under his tenure.
Lesley Ugochukwu (Southampton, on loan from Chelsea)
A promising defensive midfielder, Lesley Ugochukwu is currently on loan at Southampton from Chelsea. The 20-year-old has already represented France at U20 level but has reportedly submitted the necessary paperwork to switch his international allegiance to Nigeria.
Ugochukwu, who is the nephew of former Super Eagles defender Onyekachi Apam, would bring a strong physical presence and defensive stability to Nigeria’s midfield. His transition to the Super Eagles setup appears to be the most straightforward of all potential international switches.

Carney Chukwuemeka (Borussia Dortmund, on loan from Chelsea)
Chukwuemeka, also 20, is currently gaining experience in the Bundesliga on loan at Borussia Dortmund. The central midfielder has represented England at various youth levels but is reportedly in the process of applying for a switch to Nigeria.
However, his transition might be more complex as it requires approval from all of the United Kingdom’s football associations. If the necessary paperwork is completed in time, Chukwuemeka could provide the Super Eagles with much needed creativity and ball progression in midfield.

George Ilenikhena (AS Monaco)
A highly-rated young striker, George Ilenikhena has been making headlines in Ligue 1 with AS Monaco. The 18-year-old recently returned from injury and has already impressed, scoring key goals in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League
Born in Lagos but raised in France, Ilenikhena has not yet obtained a French passport, meaning he remains eligible to play for Nigeria. His pace, strength, and finishing ability make him a strong candidate for a call-up, especially with the Super Eagles looking to add more firepower to their attack.

Gift Orban (Hoffenheim)
After struggling for form at Lyon, Gift Orban has rediscovered his goalscoring touch in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim, netting four goals in seven games.
Orban was previously called up to the Super Eagles squad in 2023 but has yet to make his debut due to administrative delays. With Nigeria’s attack lacking consistency in recent matches, the 22-year-old forwards inclusion could provide a much needed boost, particularly with Taiwo Awoniyi sidelined and Victor Boniface yet to fully establish a strong partnership with Victor Osimhen.

Chuba Akpom (Lille, on loan from Ajax)
Chuba Akpom has been in excellent form since his move to Ligue 1, proving himself as a reliable goal scorer with two goals in his first two games. The former Arsenal striker has long been on the radar of the Nigerian national team, but he has yet to receive a senior call-up.
Now 28, Akpom has the experience and technical ability to contribute to the Super Eagles attack. With injuries and inconsistency affecting Nigeria’s forward line, his inclusion could provide the team with an experienced option.
