The return of the English Premier League following the end of the recent international break provided us with drama and talking points galore, so we picked our top four things we learned from matchday five.
Chelsea’s struggles continue
Having won just five Premier League games in 2023, Chelsea’s faltered once again this weekend against Bournemouth in their visit to the Vitality Stadium. Despite their dominance in the game Chelsea were only able to create one more chance than the home side.
The result leaves Chelsea in 14th place after a worrying start to the season that has seen them pick up just five points from their opening five games and scoring only five times.
Manchester United disappoint again
Man United’s rocky start to the season was extended on Saturday as Brighton secured a 3-1 win against Erik ten Hag’s team.
Despite a positive start to the game, former United player Danny Welbeck opened the scoring against the run of play in the 20th minute. Brighton took control of the game from then on with Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro heaping the misery on the Red Devils to make it 3-0, before a consolation goal from Hannibal Mejbri.
The result means Man United are already six points behind Brighton in fifth, leaving ten Hag’s side with a lot of ground to make up to get back in the hunt for the European places.
Richarlison to the rescue
Richarlison, who has opened up about his struggles with his mental health in recent weeks, was the hero for Tottenham this Saturday as he had his best moments in a Spurs shirt.
With Sheffield United leading the game 1-0 going into the final minutes all hope seemed lost, but then up stepped Richarlison. The Brazilian scored a towering header in the 98th minute to level the scoring, before finding a neat pass into Dejan Kulusevski who fired into Wes Foderingham’s net in the 100th minute to win the game in the most dramatic fashion.
Arsenal finally win at Goodison Park
Arsenal ended their Goodison Park misery against Everton this weekend thanks to substitute Leandro Trossard’s fantastic finish.
The Gunners have struggled in recent years in their trips to the blue half of Merseyside, with them failing to win at Goodison since their 5-2 victory back in October 2017. It looked like this run was bound to continue with Gabriel Martinelli’s goal being controversially ruled out by VAR. Thankfully for Arsenal though, Trossard was able to find the winner as Arsenal continue their unbeaten start to the season.
