How The EPL Top Scorer Race Stands

With the end of matchday five in the English Premier League last weekend, the top scorers race has started to shape up as players start to hit form after the long summer break.

However, as the Premier League so often does, multiple surprise packages have been thrown in the mix with some unexpected players finding themselves in the early top goal scorers race.

Despite these surprise packages, the man with the most goals after five games is none other than the Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland. After a record breaking first year in the EPL last season, where he scored a breathtaking 36 goals in 35 games, the Manchester City striker has hit the ground running again this season. With seven goals scored in his first five games, we doubt Haaland will leave that top spot for the rest of the season.

Haaland top goalscorer for 2023/24: 1.23

Coming in behind Haaland are three players who all sit on four goals, these being Odsonne Edouard (Crystal Palace), Evan Ferguson (Brighton and Hove Albion) and Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford).

Edouard’s four goals so far this season already bring him just one behind his tally for last season, and two behind his tally from 2021/22. With him starting in such form, we might finally be seeing the player who scored 62 goals across four full league seasons in Scotland prior to his move to Crystal Palace.

As for Evan Ferguson, the 18-year-old has hit the ground running this season despite the fact that he’s not yet become Brighton’s nailed on starting striker. With just two starts in the league, his tally of four goals leaves the Irishman with a scoring frequency of a goal every 55 minutes, better than leading scorer Haaland’s frequency of every 63 minutes.

Although it’s easy to doubt Ferguson will keep this record up for the rest of the season, the striker has every chance of sitting with the best strikers in the league come the end of the season.

Ferguson to finish top goalscorer: 34.00

Following behind these are a series of players including Heung-min Son with three goals, who appears to have found his form after a disappointing last season. Taiwo Awoniyi also finds himself on three goals and after an impressive first season where he scored 10 in the league, the Nigerian will be wanting to increase his tally this time out. Finally Callum Wilson also sits on three goals this season, despite starting just once for Newcastle.

Elsewhere, usual top scoring candidate Mohamed Salah has scored just twice so far, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard have also scored twice, while Marcus Rashford has only scored once so far this season.

With 33 games left to play though, the top scorers list is sure to see it’s fair amount of changes between now and the end of the season.
