The UEFA Champions League continues tonight with matchday five.
Wednesday’s standout fixture is undoubtedly the encounter between Liverpool and reigning champions Real Madrid, and in this article, we take a closer look at the match.
Liverpool vs Real Madrid
Wednesday 27 November, 21:00
Anfield
Liverpool remain the only side in the Champions League to have maintained the perfect record in the league phase thus far, leaving them top of the standings with 12 points from four victories, including a nine goal difference thanks to 10 goals scored and just one conceded.
They have comfortably defeated Milan (3-1), Bologna (2-0) and Bayer Leverkusen (4-0) while also narrowly beating Leipzig (1-0), leaving them as the side to beat so far in this competition.
That strong form on the continent has been replicated in their domestic outings, with Arne Slot’s side having suffered just one defeat from their 14 matches in England, winning 12 and drawing one.
Slot’s side will undoubtedly be full of confidence given they lead both the Premier League and Champions League tables, and the bonus of playing at Anfield could prove pivotal in the Reds securing another win.
In comparison, Real Madrid have endured a difficult opening to the campaign across all competitions, sitting 18th in the Champions League standings and second in La Liga, trailing Barcelona by four points, though Los Blancos do have a game in hand.
Despite adding Kylian Mbappe to last seasons Champions League winning squad, Carlo Ancelotti’s men have struggled to form bonds in the attacking areas, and with plenty of defensive injuries, they have suffered in matches as a result.
They have lost to both AC Milan and Lille in their first three games, while they also struggled in large periods of their victories against Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund, performances Ancelotti will be desperate to improve upon in following games.
Real Madrid have avoided defeat to Liverpool in all of their encounters over the last 15 years, but with them weakened by poor form and injuries, possibly including the likes of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo for Wednesday’s game, Liverpool are certainly the favourites heading into this one.
Liverpool Predicted XI: Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz; Nunez
Real Madrid Predicted XI: Courtois; Valverde, Asencio, Rudiger, Mendy; Camavinga, Modric; Guler, Bellingham, Diaz; Mbappe
Bet9ja Tips
Liverpool will be full of confidence given their phenomenal start to the season, even more so given the fact they will be playing in front of an electric Anfield atmosphere that will hope to push their side over the line with a win against Real Madrid for the first time in 15 years.
With Real Madrid also likely to be without some of their top performers, including Vinicius Junior and Rodyrgo, as well as defensive issues meaning Raul Asencio is likely to make his Champions League debut in centre back, we believe Liverpool are the stronger side and will win here.
Mohamed Salah has scored 12 and assisted 10 in his first 18 appearances across all competitions this season, including goals in three of his last four games. The Egyptian has, however, managed just one goal in the Champions League this season, a record we believe he will extend with a goal here. You can get odds of 2.15 for this to happen, at Bet9ja.
Bet9ja Odds (at time of writing): Liverpool win: 1.77, Draw: 4.15, Real Madrid win: 4.25
