The 2024 European Championship is nearing its conclusion, so we’ve taken a closer look at some of the most underperforming players in the tournament so far.
With just one match left in what has been an exciting tournament, some big-name players have struggled to find form.
GK – Andriy Lunin, Ukraine
Andriy Lunin played a key role for Real Madrid last term, but after a disastrous first game where he made mistakes and achieved a WhoScored rating of 3.80, he was dropped for the remainder of the tournament.
RB – Kyle Walker, England
Despite England reaching the final, Kyle Walker has looked a shadow of his normal self this tournament, with his weaknesses being emphasised when not in Pep Guardiola’s system. This has led to him having an average WhoScored rating of 6.55 so far.
LB – Josko Gvardiol, Croatia
Gvardiol is another Manchester City star who had a poor Euro 2024. He was meant to be the rock at the back for Croatia but was part of the defense that was dismantled 3-0 by Spain and conceded twice against Albania.
CB – Robin Le Normand, Spain
Robin Le Normand lost his cool and picked up his second yellow card against Germany, which meant he missed the semi-final clash against France. His country looked far more solid without him in the back line and it remains to be seen if he will start in the final against England.
CB – Virgil van Dijk, Netherlands
Arguably one of the best players heading into the tournament, Van Dijk has found things difficult at Euro 2024. He was particularly poor in the 3-2 defeat against Austria, where he made several mistakes, before conceding twice in the semi-final as England took victory.
CM – Conor Gallagher, England
Conor Gallagher has really struggled when called upon this tournament and does not look like he will get near the starting XI again. When he was chosen to start, he was substituted at half-time for Kobbie Mainoo and has achieved an average WhoScored rating of 6.05.
CM – Joey Veerman, Netherlands
Joey Veerman had a positive campaign for PSV Eindhoven last term, but he has failed to replicate this form for the Netherlands. He was embarrassingly subbed off in the 36th minute against Austria due to his poor display.
CAM – Phil Foden, England
After receiving the Premier League Player of the Season award last term, Phil Foden was expected to be the star man for England at the Euros. However, he hasn’t lived up to potential in this tournament so far. Can he turn it on for England in the final?
CAM – Antoine Griezmann, France
Antoine Griezmann has been a key player for France in recent times, but it was quite the opposite at Euro 2024. He achieved an average WhoScored rating of 6.50 and was even dropped to the bench in the semi-final defeat against Spain.
ST – Romelu Lukaku, Belgium
Belgium’s all-time record goalscorer might have felt his luck was out after he failed to score in the four games played at the tournament, with three goals disallowed. Lukaku performed below par by his usual standards and achieved an average WhoScored rating of 6.54.
ST – Aleksandar Mitrovic, Serbia
Aleksandar Mitrovic had an outstanding season in front of goal last term, netting 40 goals in all competitions for Al-Hilal. However, he failed to replicate this form for Serbia, finishing the tournament goalless and achieving an average WhoScored rating of 6.38.
