Last night’s game between Arsenal and Chelsea went as expected for the Gunners, but the final result was far from what people would have predicted. The hosts scored within four minutes thanks to Leandro Trossard’s effort that sneaked in at the near post. Despite both teams creating significant chances in the remaining minutes of the first half, the two sides went into the break with the score still at 1-0.
The scenario quickly changed in the second half as Arsenal turned up the pressure on their London rivals, scoring in the 52nd minute through Ben White and again five minutes later thanks to Kai Havertz. Havertz grabbed his brace to make it four in the 65th minute before Ben White finished the scoring with a cross-turned-shot in the 70th minute, topping off a humiliating night for the Blues.
With this result, let’s take a look at the biggest losses between traditional Big Six teams in the Premier League era:

Manchester United 8 – 2 Arsenal
August 28, 2011
While Arsenal had already fallen below the standards they had initially set in the first years of Arsene Wenger’s reign, now competing solely to finish within the Champions League places rather than winning the league title, this defeat confirmed how far behind they truly were. The scoring started after 22 minutes through Danny Welbeck, with goals following from Ashley Young (2), Wayne Rooney (3), Nani (1), and Park Ji-sung (1). Arsenal did at least get two consolation goals through Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie, but it meant little as the Gunners hit rock bottom.
Manchester City 6 – 0 Chelsea
February 10, 2019
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were at their absolute best when they faced Chelsea in this match, returning to the top of the Premier League table thanks to the victory, eventually winning the title altogether. City quickly went ahead with Raheem Sterling’s opening goal after four minutes, with Sergio Aguero scoring twice and Ilkay Gundogan adding a fourth within 25 minutes. Chelsea did hold out from conceding any more until the second half, with Aguero grabbing his record-levelling 11th Premier League hat-trick thanks to a penalty in the 56th minute. Sterling finished the scoring in the 80th minute, adding the sixth, handing Chelsea their worst defeat since a 7-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in April 1991.
Liverpool 7 – 0 Manchester United
March 5, 2023
The biggest margin of victory on this list came just last year when Liverpool demolished bitter rivals Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield. Manchester United were unbelievably coming into this game in an extremely strong position, having lost just one of their last 22 matches across all competitions and had won the Carabao Cup just seven days earlier. United’s performance, especially in the first half, could have seen them enter half-time in the lead with huge chances going amiss from Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes. Instead, it was Liverpool who took the lead thanks to Cody Gakpo. The second half saw the visitors completely crumble though, as Liverpool scored six goals thanks to Darwin Nunez (2), Mohamed Salah (2), Roberto Firmino (1), and Gakpo getting his second. This became the biggest victory in the history of the fixture, surpassing Liverpool’s 7-1 record all the way back in 1895-96.
Manchester United 1 – 6 Manchester City
October 23, 2011
Manchester United appears on this list once again, this time going back to the 2011/12 season for the second time. Having beaten Arsenal 8-2 just months prior, United were then on the receiving end of a humiliating thrashing as city rivals Manchester City dismantled them at Old Trafford. The 6-1 defeat saw United suffer their worst home defeat since February 1955, and the first time United had conceded six goals at Old Trafford since 1930. This was City’s first win in seven matches against Manchester United, who had won five and drawn one of the previous six, and went on to be a massive result for the blue half of Manchester as they won the title with a superior goal difference, one that this game provided them with. The result was more than just a heavy defeat for Manchester United as it not only helped City to win their first-ever Premier League title but marked the power shift that was to come with City now dominating the English division in recent seasons.
