There is still one final game to be played before the 2023/24 Serie A season comes to a close with Atalanta set to play Fiorentina, but for the remaining 18 teams in the league, their season is already over.
After winning their first league title in 33 years last season many would have had high expectations for Napoli this time around, but the Blues have failed to impress in a massively underwhelming campaign.
Their title defence will go down as one of the worst in Serie A history finishing in 10th place with 53 points, a far cry from the 90 they achieved to win the title last year.
They finished the season without a victory in their final seven fixtures, resulting in them finishing four points behind eighth-placed Fiorentina, who secured UEFA Europa Conference League qualification, and an unbelievable 41 points behind the champions Inter Milan.
How did Osimhen get on in 2023/24?
A managerial merry-go-round that saw Napoli coached by three different managers and injuries to key players such as Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen saw Napoli fail to ever get into gear, earning their place in the history books for all the wrong reasons.
While for a majority of the squad it would have been a hugely disappointing season for both team and individual achievements, Osimhen’s individual campaign was rather successful given the circumstances.
Osimhen made just 25 appearances in the Serie A, only 22 of these being starts, due to a string of injuries, but his goalscoring record was still very impressive. The Nigerian netted 15 times in those appearances, his second-highest tally in a league campaign across his entire career and only bettered by his outstanding 26 Serie A goals last year.
He finished as not only Napoli’s top scorer in the league but also with the fourth most assists in the team, setting up three goals for his teammates, and as the third top scorer across the entire division.
Napoli’s end to the campaign was their worst run in the season going without victory for seven consecutive games, but it was no fault of the Nigerian striker. Osimhen netted four times in those final seven fixtures and managed nine in the final 14 across all competitions after his return to the side against Barcelona in February following a lengthy spell out due to the Africa Cup of Nations and injury.
Osimhen’s 2023/24 rating
Despite Napoli’s season certainly going down as a failure that will live long in the memory, Osimhen certainly deserves credit for his performances and goal output given the circumstances of the side. With this, and backed up by WhoScored, we would give Osimhen’s individual campaign for 2023/24 a solid 7/10.
