While the Nigeria Football Federation have not yet released the official squad list for the Unity Cup, there have been several reports stating that invitations to compete in the tournament have been extended to several players, with multiple unexpected stars likely to feature due to many of the regular players being unavailable due to club commitments.
The likes of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman are unavailable for the opening match of the Unity Cup due to commitments with their respective clubs, meaning Eric Chelle is set to call up several debutants.
Super Eagles assistant coach Daniel Ogunmodede has said that “The Unity Cup is an opportunity for us to see some new players that ought to be seen, inclusive of the home-based.”
Among the home-based stars expected to receive a call-up for the Unity Cup is legendary striker Ahmed Musa. The Kano Pillars forward is set to make a highly anticipated return to the national team, marking his first appearance since featuring in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Having previously captained the Super Eagles, Musa is likely to reclaim the armband and lead Nigeria in the tournament.
Joining the list of potential call-ups for the Unity Cup are promising talents Auwal Ibrahim and Daniel Bameyi. Reports indicate that Chelle has been closely monitoring the ongoing U20 AFCON, attending matches to evaluate emerging players as he continues his preparations for the Unity Cup. Both Ibrahim and Bameyi have made strong cases for inclusion, catching the eye in man-of-the-match outings against Tunisia and Morocco, respectively.

While Nigeria’s usual foreign-based stars, such as Osimhen and Lookman, will be unavailable due to club commitments, reports suggest that other foreign-based players, such as Christantus Uche of Getafe and Chuba Akpom of Lille are set for call-ups.
Uche has impressed in his debut La Liga campaign, scoring three goals and assisting five in 30 appearances for Getafe, with the 20-year-old proving to be one of Nigeria’s hottest young prospects. As for Akpom, the forward has netted two goals since joining Lille on loan from Ajax in January, but the striker is awaiting the finalisation of his Nigerian passport before he is eligible for the tournament.
