The 5 Biggest Talking Points ahead Of This Week’s EPL

Matchday 27 of the English Premier League arrives this midweek, signalling yet another crucial chapter as the season edges ever closer to its conclusion. With every game carrying increasing significant, teams across the league are battling harder than ever to secure points vital to their ambitions.

Whether it is the heated race for European spots, the relentless fight for the title or the desperate fight for survival, the stakes are higher with each passing fixture.

We take a closer look at matchday 27 and look at the five biggest talking points ahead of the action:

Can Chelsea reignite their fight for Champions League?

For a large duration of the season, Chelsea were an unlikely participant in the race for the Premier League title, but their form has taken an extreme slip in the last weeks.

The Blues have won just three of their last 12 matches across all competitions, including two wins, three draws and five losses during that time in the Premier League – causing Chelsea to fall to seventh in the standings.

Enzo Maresca’s men trail fourth-placed Manchester City by only one point, but a victory could be crucial in reigniting their fight for the Champions League places, otherwise they may see the other sides pull away from them in the final weeks.

The Blues will look to reignite their Champions League pursuit when they face struggling Southampton, giving Chelsea the perfect opportunity to record all three points.

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United conundrum

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United tenure has been far from plain sailing, winning 10, drawing three and losing nine of his first 22 matches in charge across all competitions.

The Red Devils are on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish, sat 15th in the table with just 30 points from 26 league outings, and while there is no chance for them to secure a European place, their fans will be hoping for signs of improvement in the final matchdays.

A match-up with Ipswich Town, who were Amorim’s first opponent in charge of the Red Devils, could provide a chance for Man United to get on track going towards the end of the campaign, and an improvement on recent weeks is required if Amorim is to stay in charge and fulfil his promise with Man Utd.

Will Manchester City bounce back against reinvigorated Tottenham?

Man City’s poor form continued with yet another dismal loss to Liverpool in their last match, convincingly losing 2-0 to the Reds at their home stadium – a sign of how far they have fallen this term.

With the chance of dropping out of the Champions League places altogether becoming a possible reality, Pep Guardiola will be desperate for his side to bounce back against Tottenham on Wednesday.

However, Spurs have been much improved in their last two matches, beating Manchester United and Ipswich Town, while they also have a favourable record against the Citizens, including 2-1 and 4-0 wins in this season alone.

That leaves the question, can Manchester City bounce back against the newly-reinvigorated Tottenham?

Arsenal must win to keep title dreams alive

Arsenal failed to capitalise on Liverpool dropping points over recent matches as they fell to a disappointing defeat to West Ham in their last Premier League game, allowing Liverpool to further extend their lead at the top of the standings.

The Gunners, now 11 points behind but with a game in hand over Liverpool, must win their final matches of the season to have a chance of beating Liverpool to the title, starting with their match against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Forest have also lost each of their last two matches, giving Arsenal a chance to start the winning momentum required to lift the title at the end of the campaign.

Liverpool could put one hand on the trophy with three points

After Arsenal dropped points in the defeat to West Ham, Liverpool moved one step closer to the title with a superb 2-0 victory against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, extending their lead to 11 points at the top of the table.

With only 11 matches left to play, though the Gunners do have a game in hand, the Reds could put one hand on the trophy if they can secure another three points against Newcastle on Wednesday night.

However, the Magpies will be formidable opponents despite their poor record at Anfield, chasing a spot in the top four and off the back of defeating Nottingham Forest 4-3 in a highly-entertaining matchup on matchday 26.

Despite that, could the motivation of virtually placing one hand on the trophy be enough for Liverpool to secure the win?
