Jay-Jay Okocha vs Karlsruher SC – 1993
Widely regarded as the greatest Nigerian footballer of all time, Jay-Jay Okocha epitomised the brilliance and magic of football. Known for his incredible dribbling skills and flair, he scored one of the most famous solo goals in history when his Eintracht Frankfurt side faced Karlsruher SC.
Collecting the ball inside the box, with none other than the legendary Oliver Kahn rushing out to close him down, Okocha twisted left, faked right, went past a defender, twisted and turned some more before smashing the ball into the back of the net. It was a simply unforgettable goal.
Rashidi Yekini vs Bulgaria – 1994
Rashidi Yekini’s goal at the 1994 World Cup may not be remembered for being an incredible long-range strike, an individual piece of brilliance, or an acrobatic wonder goal, but it remains one of the most iconic in Nigeria’s history.
The 1994 World Cup was Nigeria’s first appearance at football’s most prestigious tournament, and Yekini’s goal in the 21st minute, from just inside the six-yard box, was the country’s first-ever goal at the World Cup.
Yekini simply slotted the ball into the empty net from a pass across the box, taking the Bulgarian goalkeeper out of the game. However, his celebration—clutching the net and screaming with joy—has become an iconic image in both World Cup and Nigerian football history.
Nwankwo Kanu vs Chelsea – 1999
Nwankwo Kanu is another player touted as one of the best Nigerian and African footballers of all time, and this goal shows exactly why.
Arsenal were 2-0 down with just 15 minutes remaining in this game against Chelsea, and the match seemed lost. But Kanu had other ideas. He scored a quickfire double in the 75th and 83rd minutes, giving Arsenal a chance at an astonishing comeback victory.
Kanu saved the best for last, scoring his third and final goal in the 90th minute to give the Gunners a dramatic victory against their London rivals. After chasing a poor pass wide to keep the ball in play, a clearance ricocheted off the forward, allowing him to drive towards the byline.
Chelsea goalkeeper Ed De Goey had a moment of madness, charging out of his goal towards Kanu, who was closer to the corner flag than the goal. Kanu expertly sidestepped the keeper before curling the ball into the net from an unimaginably tight angle, securing a famous win for Arsenal.
Sunday Oliseh vs Spain – 1998
Nigeria faced Spain in the opening match of the 1998 World Cup, where the Super Eagles secured a phenomenal victory against a side boasting the talents of Raúl, Fernando Hierro, and many more.
After going 1-0 up, 2-1 down, and then equalising in the 73rd minute, Nigeria seemed to have salvaged a draw against a Spanish side that had dominated possession. But Sunday Oliseh had other plans, with one final chance to win the match.
A long throw-in was headed out to the edge of the box by Hierro, falling perfectly for Oliseh, who opted to smash the bouncing ball towards goal. It was the right choice—his effort flew past Andoni Zubizarreta, giving Nigeria the win with an outrageous piece of technique.
Daniel Amokachi vs Greece – 1994
Daniel Amokachi’s goal was yet another brilliant moment for Nigeria in their debut World Cup tournament, securing a victory against Greece and ensuring Nigeria finished top of Group D, ahead of Argentina and Bulgaria.
After Nigeria won the ball back in midfield, Amokachi dropped deep to receive a pass, eventually being found with a line-splitting ball. He turned, shrugged off one defender, and charged towards goal, cutting across two more defenders to give himself a better angle.
While still cutting across the pitch, Amokachi unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box that flew past the helpless goalkeeper and into the top right corner. It was a historic goal that has gone down as one of the very best in World Cup history.
