THE MAIN EPL TALKING POINTS FOR MATCHDAY 5

As the English Premier League already hurtles towards matchday five, the drama and storylines from the season are starting to stack up in impressive fashion. From Liverpool’s nail-biting late winners to the pressure mounting on Manchester United’s Ruben Amorim and everything else in between, there are plenty of talking points after just four matchdays.

Now moving into the fifth fixture of the campaign, these storylines will take centre stage as the weekend’s action gets previewed, and we dive into the biggest talking points of the weekend.

Merseyside meeting

One of several standout fixtures this weekend, Liverpool and Everton will meet in the first Merseyside derby of the season at the iconic and historic Anfield Stadium.

Arne Slot’s side will be bidding to maintain their flawless start to the campaign, which has seen Liverpool win all of their last five games (four EPL and one UCL) in the final 10 minutes, including three stoppage-time winners.

Meanwhile, Everton are hoping to spoil their streak and win just their second match at Anfield since the turn of the millennium, having only won one of their last 29 visits to the ground – triumphing 2-0 in February 2021.

Time running out for Amorim

After a miserable 2024/25 season but a productive summer transfer window, hopes were high than Amorim’s Manchester United would enjoy a significantly improved term, but that has been far from the case so far this campaign.

Man Utd have won only one of their five games this term, with two defeats and two draws, including a devastating 3-0 loss to Manchester City and an unacceptable penalty defeat to Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup second round.

Those results have seen the pressure quickly mount on Amorim’s role at the club, and with the Red Devils facing another tough test against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea, Man Utd simply must record a positive result if Amorim’s job is to stay secure.

Arsenal meet Man City in title-contending clash

Arsenal and Manchester City will round out the weekend’s action on Sunday afternoon as they meet at the Emirates Stadium in an early battle between two anticipated English Premier League title contenders.

The Gunners have won three of their four Premier League games, only dropping points in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side desperate to secure all three points against Man City and avoid falling further behind the reigning champions in the race for the title.

Meanwhile, Man City have won two and lost two of their EPL fixtures, meaning a defeat against the Gunners would already leave them potentially nine points behind Liverpool and six behind Arsenal, leaving this as a must-win match in order to narrow the gap.

Can Aston Villa break goalscoring duck?

Aston Villa remarkably remain the only team in England’s top seven divisions yet to score a goal in the league, and Unai Emery’s side will be desperate to end that dismal streak when they take on Sunderland.

The Villans did score in their recent EFL Cup meeting with Brentford, but a penalty defeat means Aston Villa are still yet to record a victory in any competition this season, while they are now without a win in their last six games.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats will certainly look to make their clash with the Villans difficult, especially at their formidable Stadium of Light home, and with their strong defensive performances so far this season, Aston Villa will have their work cut out for them if they are to break their goalscoring duck.
