Top 5 Goals Of UEFA Champions League Matchday 1

The UEFA Champions League returned this week where we saw some top quality games on display, and we picked out the five best goals from all the action.

Europe’s most prestigious competition certainly did not disappoint in terms of providing great moments, from long-range efforts to excellent team displays, this week had it all.

Kevin Wimmer

Celtic 5-1 SK Slovan Bratislava

SK Slovan Bratislava found themselves on the receiving end of a 5-1 drumming on Wednesday night against Celtic, but the only goal from the visitors was a thing of beauty.

Kevin Wimmer received the ball inside the penalty area and took one touch to compose himself before audaciously curling the ball into the very top corner with the outside of his left-boot.

Zeno Debast

Sporting CP 2-0 Lens

Sporting CP picked up all three points on the opening day of the Champions League against Lens and Zeno Debast’s second-half strike was arguably goal of the week.

The centre-back picked the ball up from 25-yards-out and emphatically struck the ball into the top left corner which left the goalkeeper with no chance.

Kenan Yildiz

Juventus 3-1 PSV Eindhoven

PSV travelled to Juventus on Tuesday night but ended up coming away with nothing and it was Yildiz’s excellent first-half goal that stole the show.

Yildiz drove from deep at his defender and cut inside to the penalty area before he unleashed a speculative effort which curled off the far-right post into the back of the net.

Orkun Kokcu

Crvena Zvezda 1-2 Benfica

Benfica travelled to Crvena Zvezda last night and came away from all three points after they battled their way to a 2-1 victory.

Orkun Kokcu doubled his sides lead in the 29th minute of the game with an expertly placed free-kick from 25-yards-out which curled into the top-right hand corner.

Maghnes Akliouche

Monaco 2-1 Barcelona

Barcelona travelled to France as favourites to beat Monaco but after a 10th minute red card for Eric Garcia it left his side with an up hill battle for the rest of the game.

Akliouche broke the deadlock in the game after just 16 minutes played, when he cut inside from the right flank onto his left-foot and fired the ball into the bottom corner past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
