UCL Knockouts Social Round-up: Mbappé Shines, PSV Stun Juve & PSG Run Riot

The UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-offs certainly lived up to expectations, delivering high drama, stunning comebacks, and some statement performances.

With places in the last-16 on the line, we saw everything from heroic hat-tricks to controversial decisions, and here’s how the action unfolded across Europe last night.

Real Madrid 3-1 Man CIty (agg 6-3)

Kylian Mbappé delivered a masterclass, sealing his third Champions League hat-trick to send Real Madrid into the last-16 in style. The French forward opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a stunning lob, skillfully sat Josko Gvardiol down for his second just after the half-hour mark, and curled in a clinical third in the 61st minute.

With Erling Haaland watching from the bench, City struggled to find a way back. Nico González pulled one back in added time after Omar Marmoush hit the woodwork, but Madrid’s dominant display ensured the holders progressed comfortably.

Mbappé certainly got the seal of approval from another French Real Madrid icon.

PSV 3-1 Juventus (agg 4-3)

Ryan Flamingo’s dramatic extra-time winner sent PSV into the UEFA Champions League last-16 for the first time since 2007.

The second leg came to life after the break when Noa Lang’s pinpoint pass set up Ivan Perišic to level the tie on aggregate. Juventus quickly regained their aggregate lead through Timothy Weah’s stunning strike, but Ismael Saibari’s close-range finish forced extra time.

With the game hanging in the balance, Flamingo capitalized on a defensive mix-up in the 98th minute to complete PSV’s comeback, knocking Juventus out and sealing a famous European night in Eindhoven.

The result left Inter Milan as the sole Serie A survivors in the Champions League, after AC Milan and Atalanta were humbled by Feyenoord and Club Brugge on Tuesday.

PSG 7-0 Brest (agg 10-0)

Paris Saint-Germain stormed into the last 16 with a historic 7-0 demolition of Brest, completing a 10-0 aggregate rout—the second-biggest aggregate win in Champions League history.

Bradley Barcola opened the scoring before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted his first European goal for PSG just before halftime. The second half saw Les Parisiens run riot, with Vitinha -Man of the Match in both legs – firing in a fine third before Désiré Doué, Nuno Mendes, Gonçalo Ramos, and Senny Mayulu all found the net to complete the record-breaking night.

PSG have now faced Brest four times this season, with a combined aggregate score of 18-3…

Dortmund 0-0 Sporting (agg 3-0)

Borussia Dortmund comfortably secured their place in the last 16 with a controlled 0-0 draw against Sporting, sealing a 3-0 aggregate victory.

Sporting’s slim hopes of a comeback were made even harder by the absence of star forward Viktor Gyökeres, and they struggled to threaten throughout.

Dortmund had the better chances, with Marcel Sabitzer denied by Rui Silva in the first half, while Serhou Guirassy saw his second-half penalty saved. Emre Can also had a goal disallowed as the hosts dominated but couldn’t add to their first-leg advantage.

It’s now five defeats, one draw and just one win in the Bundesliga for BVB in 2025, but yet they’ve marched on comfortably to the UCL round-of-16.

The stage is now all set for the UEFA Champions League draw this Friday, where teams will learn their Last-16 opponents, as well as their potential path to the final in Munich on 31st May.
