UCL Matchday 8 Preview: Who Needs What To Qualify for The Knockouts

The final matchday of the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League group phase is upon us, with all 18 fixtures set to unfold simultaneously in what promises to be a dramatic night across Europe.

Qualification is still very much in the air, with teams battling to secure their place in the top 24, while the continent’s elite are also fighting to ensure their place in the top eight as they aim to avoid the play-offs.

But who needs what to qualify? Read on to find out:

Who is already qualified?

Arsenal and Bayern Munich are the only two teams to have already confirmed their place in the league phase’s top eight, with the Gunners requiring just a point to ensure a top-spot finish on the final day, while the Bavarians need a win against PSV Eindhoven and Arsenal to lose if they are to finish first.

Elsewhere, Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Sporting Lisbon and Tottenham Hotspur have all secured qualification to the knockout rounds, while these teams are still battling for a place in the top eight to move directly into the Last 16.

At the other end of the league phase table, Eintracht Frankfurt, Kairat Almaty, Slavia Prague and Villarreal have all already been eliminated from the competition.

Who could qualify in the top eight?

Technically, any team down to 17th-placed Galatasaray and 18th-placed Qarabag could secure a place in the top eight, with the Horsemen and Gala on 10 points and trailing the top eight by just three points going into the final matchday.

However, with goal difference and the fact that several teams above Qarabag will face each other on the final day, the chances of the current 18th-placed side moving into the top eight are extremely slim.

Real Madrid (on 15 points) and Liverpool (on 15 points) can confirm their place in the top eight with a victory, while Tottenham Hotspur (on 14 points) would also ensure a spot in the round of 16 with a final-day victory.

Sixth to 13th are all locked level on 13 points, meaning a victory – as well as other results going their way – could see several changes to the current teams in the top eight.

Inter Milan and Juventus (on 12 points), and Borussia Dortmund (on 11 points) all also need victories and several results to go their way if they are to move into the top eight of the Champions League standings.

Who could qualify for the play-offs?

Every team from third-placed Bayern Munich down to 32nd-placed Ajax could still finish in the play-off places – between ninth and 24th in the standings.

Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray and Qarabag could all qualify for the top eight but are also at risk of falling out of the top 24 altogether, although an improbable run of results in other fixtures would be required for any of the three to miss out on a place in the knockout rounds.

As a result, any of Ajax, Union Saint-Gilloise, Pafos, Benfica, Bodo/Glimt, Club Brugge, Copenhagen, Napoli, Olympiacos, Athletic Bilbao, PSV Eindhoven, AS Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen, Marseille, Qarabag, Galatasaray and Borussia Dortmund could either qualify in the top 24 or miss out entirely.
