We caught up with Bet9ja Ambassador and former African Player of the Year Victor Ikpeba recently after Alejandro Garnacho’s stunning overhead kick caught the attention of football fans around the world.
With so many outstanding goals to choose from, find out what Victor rates as his favourite ever English Premier League goal down below!
What did you make of Alejandro Garnacho’s bicycle kick this week Victor?
VI: Wow, this sort of goal isn’t scored very often! You have to take your hat off to Garnacho. He’s only a young boy but to produce this sort of quality would make you think that he’s a far more experienced player.
He has massive quality and still has that youthful fearlessness that some of the best players in the world have when they break onto the scene.
The goal itself was incredible – to adjust your body that quickly and make that sort of contact with a ball that is travelling away from you is extremely difficult. A lot of people are saying that this goal is goal of the season already and I can’t see anything beating it.
What are your favourite Premier League goals of all time?
It’s so hard to pick a few goals out of all of the ones that we’ve had in Premier League history. Off the top of my head a few stand out, notably Wayne Rooney’s bicycle kick against Manchester City in 2011.
That was very similar to Garnacho’s goal but I think the importance of the match made it more memorable. You also can’t forget Rooney’s goal from halfway when he was playing for Everton against West Ham. It’s so hard to hit a ball like that first-time from so far away and control it into the net.
Another goal that I remember distinctly from the early years of the English Premier League was David Beckham’s chip from halfway against Wimbledon. It was one of the first times that we’d ever seen a goal like this and was a special moment. I have to mention Dennis Bergkamp’s goal against Newcastle United where he turned his defender inside out and finished into the corner- I don’t think we’ll ever see a goal like that ever again!
