What Do Manchester United Need Before The Transfer Window Closes?

Manchester United have been unsurprisingly busy in the 2025 summer transfer window, with the Red Devils looking to rebuild and strengthen their squad following last season’s disastrous 15th-placed finish in the Premier League.

Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have all made big-money moves to Old Trafford as Ruben Amorim has formed a new-look attack, and the club are now expected to turn their attention to strengthening other areas of the pitch.

Man Utd’s need for further signings was on full display in their 2025/26 English Premier League opener, as they fell 1-0 to Arsenal.

Despite a dominant showing from the Red Devils, holding 61% possession and taking 22 shots to Arsenal’s nine, a lack of defensive cover and athleticism in midfield allowed the Gunners to break forward far too consistently.

Furthermore, a horrendous goalkeeping error from Altay Bayindir allowed Riccardo Calafiori to head home from close range, enabling the Gunners to ultimately escape Old Trafford with all three points.

As the transfer window edges nearer to its deadline, Man Utd must address these two key areas of concern if Amorim is to have any chance of guiding the Red Devils back up the table and to where they belong.

Manchester United transfer targets:

Midfield needs strengthening

Man Utd have been heavily linked with a number of more mobile and defensive-minded central midfielders in recent weeks, with Amorim clearly looking to improve his team’s ability to stop transitions and defensive cover in the middle of the park.

The Red Devils were reportedly interested in Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, but the Seagulls appear to be unwilling to sell the midfielder, meaning Man Utd have had to look elsewhere.

The club hold an interest in Adam Wharton, though a deal with Crystal Palace could be difficult, while recent reports suggested Man Utd are weighing up a move for Sevilla’s Lucien Agoume, who enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2024/25.

Agoume is a powerful central midfielder who ranked extremely well in all key defensive statistics, while he also has a superb technical ability, most impressively ranking in the top seven percent of La Liga midfielders for dribble success rate last term.

New goalkeeper essential

As for the goalkeeping position, Man Utd are reportedly one of several clubs weighing up a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is surplus to requirements for the Champions League holders.

A move for the Italian may be difficult due to the goalkeeper’s high wage demands, meaning the Red Devils may opt for a cheaper option, with Senne Lammens also heavily linked to the club this summer.

The 6’4” goalkeeper has impressed during his time at Royal Antwerp, earning comparisons to a younger Thibaut Courtois, and a deal for the shot-stopper could be agreed before the end of the window.

With the attack seemingly sorted, the midfield and goalkeeper positions and next on the agenda for Man Utd before the transfer window closes, as they push to get back into Europe.
