With German giants Bayern Munich reportedly agreeing a €100m fee with Tottenham Hotspur for England captain Harry Kane, it looks increasingly likely that The Three Lions and Spurs’ all time leading goalscorer will be playing in Germany next season.
Over the last decade Kane has cemented himself as a legend within the English Premier League, scoring 213 goals – placing him second in the all-time list after Alan Shearer. Bayern snatched the Bundesliga title away from Borussia Dortmund on the last day of the season to win their 11th consecutive title, but were a long way below their best over the course of the season after failing to properly replace Robert Lewandowski.
Here is why Kane could be the missing link for Bayern as they look at returning to the peak of European football.
Bayern’s style of play
Bayern Munich have always been a team focused around the performance of their striker, which has seen the likes of Lewandowski, Mario Mandzukic and Mario Gomez all play the best football of their career at the Allianz Arena.
After Lewandowski’s departure last season, Bayern missed a physical presence with an eye to goal at the top of the pitch and relied on players like Jamal Musiala and Sadio Mané to fill the gap, with Cameroonian Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting the team’s only real out-and-out number nine.
A heavy defeat at the Etihad Stadium to Manchester City highlighted Bayern’s weaknesses and strengths – the likes of Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry, Musiala and Kingsley Coman all showed their attacking ability over the 90 minutes and created many chances, but there was simply no-one to put the ball in the back o the net.
Perfect fit for Kane
It is no secret that Harry Kane is desperate to win a trophy at this point in his career. Having recently turned 30 years old, he has been one of Europe’s leading centre forwards for a long time and deserves some silverware for his outstanding goalscoring over the years.
Bayern have been completely dominant in the Bundesliga over the last decade and have added two UEFA Champions League titles in that period. Kane is absolutely the type of player to continue their domestic dominance, especially in the Bundesliga which is a less intense and competitive league than the English Premier League.
Kane’s outstanding playmaking qualities will help Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel get the most out of his outstanding wide players and allow them to both create and score goals from the wings – Kane had a great relationship with South Korean Son Heung-Min during his time at Spurs and will hope that he can build up the same level of understanding with the likes of Gnabry, Sané and Coman.
