Bet9ja’s ASIAN HANDICAP MARKET EXPLAINED!

Asian Handicap is a popular betting market in football that eliminates the possibility of a draw, creating a two-way outcome, either home win or away win. Originating in Asia, this system was designed to level out the perceived difference in ability between two teams, offering a more balanced betting experience.

How the Asian Handicap Market Works

In traditional football betting, you can place a bet on three potential outcomes: home win, draw or away win. With Asian Handicap, the draw is eliminated by applying a handicap to the perceived better team. The underdog receives a head start in terms of goals, while the favourite is handicapped by a negative goal value.

For example, in the upcoming Champions League game between Manchester City and Slavia Prague, if Manchester City (the favourites) are given a -2 handicap, they must win by at least three goals for your bet to win. If they win by two goals, the result is considered a ‘push’ and your stake is refunded, while if they win by one goal, your bet has lost.

On the other hand, if you bet on Slavia Prague with a +1 handicap, they can win, draw or lose by just one goal for your bet to win or result in a push.

Understanding Key Handicaps

  • -0.5 or +0.5 Handicap: With a -0.5 handicap, the favourite must win the game for your bet to succeed, while with a +0.5 handicap, the underdog could win or draw for your bet to win.
  • -1 or +1 Handicap: A -1 handicap requires the favourite to win by two or more goals, if they win by exactly one goal, it is a push. With a +1 handicap on the underdog, they can win or draw for your bet to win or lose by just one goal for your bet to push.

This system scales with the higher or lower the handicap you bet on, for example, if the handicap is +3 on the underdog, they can win, draw or lose by two goals for your bet to win.

  • Quarter Handicap (-0.25 or +0.25): A quarter handicap splits your bet between two handicaps. For example, if you placed a -0.25 handicap bet on the favourite, if they win the game, your bet wins. If the result is a draw, you lose half of the money you placed on the bet and the other half is returned, and if the result is a loss, then your bet loses.

On the other hand, if you bet +0.25 on the underdog and they win the game, you win the bet. If the result is a draw, you get half the stake back and win the other half at the odds they had to win, meaning you are still in profit. If the result is a loss, your bet loses.

Why Use The Asian Handicap Market

The Asian Handicap market offers several advantages, from removing the possibility of losing your bet to a draw, due to being able to bet on just two outcomes, to offering more value in mismatched games where the odds on the favourite may not be high enough.
