With European club competitions in full swing this week, Nigerian footballers
are set to take centre stage across the UEFA Champions League, Europa
League and Conference League.
As fans eagerly tune in to witness thrilling clashes and memorable moments,
several Nigerian stars will be pivotal to their teams’ ambitions. From high-
stakes Champions League battles to crucial Europa League and Conference
League matchups, these talented players could prove game-changers.
In this article, we will be spotlighting the Super Eagles stars to keep your eye
on across Europe this week:
Victor Osimhen
Osimhen made a surprise move to Galatasaray on loan during the summer, and
the striker has enjoyed a superb start to life in Turkey. He has netted four times and assisted three in seven appearances across all competitions, helping Galatasaray to a fantastic unbeaten run of 11 matches heading into Thursday’s difficult matchup with Tottenham Hotspur in the
Europa League.
While Galatasaray will be the underdog, a player of Osimhen’s calibre leading
the line could cause any team problems, especially an often vulnerable Spurs
defence, and we think the Super Eagles star could prove vital in a result for his
team.
Victor Boniface
Another Super Eagles striker who has been among the best players in Europe in
recent times is Boniface, who scored 21 times and assisted another nine in 34
appearances for Bayer Leverkusen in 2023/24, helping his side remain
unbeaten in every match apart from a Europa League final defeat to Atalanta.
Boniface has already netted eight times in 13 appearances this campaign,
including the crucial winner for Bayer Leverkusen in their last Champions
League match against Milan.
Now heading into a difficult away fixture against Liverpool, Boniface will be
required to do plenty of defending to help his side avoid conceding, but also
cause problems in attack, and we believe he will be one to watch in this game.
Ademola Lookman
Lookman has been sensational since joining Atalanta in 2022, contributing to 21
goals in 33 games in 2022/23, 26 goals in 45 games in 2023/24 and already
contributing 12 goals in 12 appearances this season.
His Europa League final performance last campaign was undoubtedly the best
showing of his career so far, scoring a hat-trick to lead Atalanta to a 3-0 win against a then-unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side, and his scoring exploits continued in the Champions League with a goal against Shakhtar Donetsk this season.
As Atalanta prepare for their game against Stuttgart on Wednesday, the Italian
side will undoubtedly look to Lookman once again to inspire the side in attack,
and we think he could create plenty of problems for Stuttgart.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru earned a brilliant move to Lazio in the summer after
scoring nine and assisting four goals in 39 matches for Hatayspor last season,
and the midfielder has made a strong start in Italy.
While he is yet to contribute to a goal in the Serie A after four appearances,
Dele-Bashiru has come to life in Lazio’s European matches, scoring one and
assisting two in his three appearances.
As Lazio prepare to host Porto in the Europa League, we believe Dele-Bashiru
could come alive once again for Capitoline.
