As the 2024 European Championships edge ever nearer, we take a closer look at some of the best talents who will feature in the tournament, starting with England’s Jude Bellingham.
Bellingham had a stellar 2023/24 campaign for Real Madrid, so Gareth Southgate and the England faithful will be hoping that he can continue this fine form in the upcoming competition to lead the Three Lions to glory for the first time in the Euros.
Player Profile:
Jude Bellingham
Overall England stats: 29 caps / 3 goals
2023/24 Club stats: 42 games / 23 goals
2023/24 Club honours: UEFA Champions League, La Liga, Spanish Cup
Maturity at young age
In what could be described as a youthful England squad, Bellingham supplies great maturity on and off the pitch for a 20-year-old, as he has already made over 200 appearances at senior club level.
With the likes of Adam Wharton and Kobbie Mainoo as midfield options, these are young players who can look at Bellingham as a player who has already played plenty of football at the highest level and can learn from to improve their own game.
Attacking threat from midfield
England notoriously lack depth in the ‘number 10’ role, someone who can provide goals and assists from deep, but Bellingham can supply this in abundance as he was joint third top scorer in La Liga last term with 19 goals.
James Maddison and Cole Palmer are two of the other players that can play in the role, but with the former not showing great form, and the latter not having great experience in an England shirt, Bellingham is looking nailed on for that position.
Link up with world’s best
In the past, England have had one or two world class players in the squad, but now the list is growing with the likes of Phil Foden, Harry Kane and Declan Rice alongside Bellingham all being some of the best players in the world in their position.
This is obviously great news for Southgate on the pitch with so many players on the same wavelength, but also off the pitch with the mentality that these top players have to succeed and the desire to lift trophies. The bookmakers tip him to be player of the tournament at odds of 10.00 and if that’s the case, England could well be lifting their first major trophy since 1966.
