After Dortmund These Are The Biggest Shock UCL Finalists Ever

Borussia Dortmund have impressively reached the UEFA Champions League Final this term despite being completely unfancied at the start of the season.

The German side beat PSG 1-0 in both legs, with Niclas Fullkrug scoring in the first leg and Mats Hummels getting the goal in the second leg.

European heavyweights such as Manchester City, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are out of the competition, so Dortmund are certainly punching above their weight making it to the final.

We picked out four teams from previous years that have also reached that stage of the competition against all odds.

Tottenham Hotspur, 2018/19

Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Mouricio Pochettino guided Spurs to their first Champions League final back in 2019, where they matched up against Premier League counterparts Liverpool, but unfortunately lost 2-0.

The North London outfit were certainly not predicted to reach the final that year with the team that they had, which showed in the league when they finished a whopping 27 points away from champions Manchester City. But a goal from Lucas Moura with the last kick of the game against Ajax in the semi-finals sent Spurs through to their only final to date in Europe’s premier competition.

Monaco, 2003/04

Monaco 0-3 FC Porto

This Champions League Final was one of underdogs, even more so for Monaco as they were overshadowed by Europe’s top clubs such as AC Milan, Real Madrid and Arsenal, who went unbeaten in the English topflight that year.

The French side did have some talented players within their ranks, however the standard of the other teams in the competition was particularly high which made them reaching the final a great shock.

Bayer Leverkusen, 2001/02

Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Real Madrid

Leverkusen reached the Champions League Final in the 2001/02 campaign, where they unfortunately lost 2-1 against Madrid, but this would certainly still be deemed as an underdog story.

The Bundesliga side impressively saw off Manchester United in the semi-final, after they drew 2-2 in the away leg and 1-1 in the home leg which meant that they went through to the final on away goals.

Valencia, 1999/200

Real Madrid 3-0 Valencia

Valencia miraculously made it to the final of the Champions League in 2000, despite other clubs with world class personal such as Arsenal, Inter Milan and Juventus being in the competition.

This all-Spanish European final was certainly a one-sided affair, after Madrid thumped Valencia 3-0, which is greater evidence of how much of a shock it was that Los Ches reached that stage of the competition.
