PSG and Barcelona renew acquaintances on Wednesday night as they come together at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
These two sides have produced some extremely memorable moments in their recent encounters in the Champions League, including Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick at Camp Nou in the first leg of their last 16 tie in 2020/21.
The most memorable of the lot came in the 2016/17 season though, when Barcelona miraculously overturned a 4-0 defeat in the last 16 first leg at the Parc des Princes with a stunning 6-1 victory at the Camp Nou, with three of these goals coming in the 88th minute onwards, in a game that is now famously known as the Remontada.
PSG vs Barcelona
Wednesday 10 April, 20:00
Parc des Princes
Despite being widely recognised as one of Europe’s powerhouse teams, PSG are still on the hunt for their long-awaited first Champions League trophy. Luis Enrique won the competition with Wednesday’s opponents nine years ago and will be looking to replicate this achievement with the French giants this year.
This season looks extremely likely to be Kylian Mbappe’s last season at the club, and what better way to part ways with the superstar than winning Europe’s most prestigious trophy together.
Mbappe has certainly played his part in PSG’s run in the Champions League so far, scoring a joint competition-high six goals in his eight appearances, including three in the two-legged affair with Real Sociedad in the last 16 which they went on to win 4-1 on aggregate.
Les Parisien come into this game without defeat since a disappointing 2-1 loss to AC Milan in the group stage of this competition at the beginning of November, leaving them unbeaten in their last 27 matches across all competitions.
They will have to avoid repeating one of their European collapses if they are to progress through this tie, with none being more well-known than the infamous Remontada defeat in 2017, which current boss Enrique oversaw as Barcelona manager.
Barcelona may have won on that famous night, but they have had their own struggles in the Champions League since Enrique won the competition with the Spanish giants in 2014/15, completing a fantastic treble in the process.
This will be their first appearance in the quarter-finals since the 2019/20 season, in which they were savagely beaten 8-2 by eventual victors Bayern Munich.
They do have the wind in their sails heading into this game though, undefeated since Xavi announced he will be departing the club at the end of the season following Barcelona’s 5-3 defeat to Villareal in January.
This run has seen them win eight and draw three, leaving them with plenty of confidence ahead of this tie with PSG as they look to give Xavi the dream parting gift.
Bet9ja Tips
PSG may have had well-recorded struggles in this competition in recent seasons, but the French giants are on a fantastic run of form that has seen them go 27 games without defeat, while they haven’t lost at Parc des Princes since September. For these reasons, we believe they will make the most of the home advantage and extend their unbeaten run with a victory here. A home win is priced up at 2.03, while a home win and over 3.5 goals is priced up at 4.75.
Mbappe is undoubtedly one of the best players on the planet and PSG’s talisman, leaving the French side reliant on Mbappe to have a good game if they are to progress through this round. The forward has netted five times in his last five games for his club, and we believe Mbappe will add to his six goals in the Champions League so far this season in this one. You can get odds of Mbappe to score anytime at 2.10 with Bet9ja.
Bet9ja Odds (at time of writing): PSG win: 2.03, Draw: 3.75, Barcelona win: 3.55
