Last weekend broke records in the English Premier League, with an astonishing 45 goals going in across 10 matches. This is the most ever in a 20-team league, and it wasn’t without a lot of drama to boot.
Newcastle drew 4-4 with Luton in a thrilling match at St.James’ Park, but the weekend highlight was Arsenal’s huge fixture at the Emirates Stadium against table-toppers Liverpool on Sunday.
We spoke to Bet9ja Ambassador Victor Ikpeba for his take on the match and his predictions for next week.
Arsenal beating Liverpool was not a shock result
The narrative before this match was that this was a must-win for both sides. Liverpool needed to create as much distance between themselves and Manchester City as possible, and Arsenal needed a win to stay in the race. If you look at the last four fixtures in the league between the two sides Arsenal have won two and drawn the other two at Anfield and dominated the majority of the fixtures.
They have so much talent going forward that their offensive woes were only going to last for so long – Gabriel Martinelli always turns up against Liverpool and gave Trent Alexander Arnold and Ibrahima Konaté so many problems with his pace, which ended up leading to his goal.
Liverpool are missing the likes of Mo Salah at the moment for sure. Arsenal found it far too easy to pin Liverpool back without his threat in behind, and controlled the majority of the match. It was a great performance by The Gunners with the likes of Declan Rice and Jorginho bossing the midfield and the atmosphere in North London was electric. You can tell by their celebrations after the final whistle how much it meant to them.
This season is going down to the wire
The way this year of Premier League football is going I can only see it going to the last game of the season. It looks like a three-horse race and each side has the potential to beat the other on their day.
