On Wednesday, Newcastle United and Manchester City prepare to start their EFL Cup campaigns as they get ready to face each other in the third round.
Newcastle are coming into the game on the back of one of the biggest wins in their league history, beating Sheffield United 8-0 at Bramall Lane with all eight goals coming from different goal scorers.
Manchester City also won their last game, defeating Nottingham Forest 2-0 despite playing with 10 men for 45 minutes following Rodri’s dismissal early in the second half.
Newcastle United vs Manchester City
Wednesday 27 September, 20:00
St James’ Park
Newcastle have already had a season full of ups and downs despite having played just seven games. The Magpies destroyed Aston Villa 5-1 on the opening day, but followed this up by losing three in a row. They went on to have a less than convincing performance against Milan in the UEFA Champions League opener as they scraped through with a 0-0 draw. However, their performance saw a drastic improvement in the next game as they embarrassed Sheffield United in their own stadium with a thumping 8-0 victory.
Despite the striker position being divided up between Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak so far this season, both have impressed when on the pitch. Wilson is on four goals for the season whilst Isak sits one behind him on three.
In contrast to Newcastle, nearly everything has gone perfectly for Manchester City so far. Since losing on penalties in the Community Shield to Arsenal, City have shown utter dominance with them winning every one of their last eight games. During this run they have scored 20 goals while conceding only five, already showing similar levels of performances to what they achieved during their treble winning last season.
Erling Haaland has been in top form already this season too. The Norwegian has scored eight goals in his six appearances in the Premier League this season, three more than the next highest scorer Heung-min Son on five.
