Lionel Messi signed for Paris Saint-German in 2021 and things have not quite gone to plan for the world’s best.
Since the Argentine signed for PSG, he has helped his side win Ligue 1 and the French Super Cup, however both trophies are ones the French side are always expected to win.
We highlighted three reasons the transfer has not worked out.
Overhaul of superstars
Messi signed for PSG in a side which already had world-class talents such as Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, so it looked like they would be a force to be reckoned with.
Having three world-class talents in one side might seem like a perfect fit, but things have evidently not worked out as they have failed in the UEFA Champions League during the two seasons Messi has been at the club.
It is evident that in the big games in Europe against better opposition, such as the 3-0 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the Last 16 this season, the chemistry has not been there, with all three attackers used to having the whole game plan targeting their individual strengths.
That could be a reason why Messi netted just six league goals last season, his lowest tally since 2005/06.
Lack of quality elsewhere
PSG have been known to invest heavily in their side, they have spent €1.4 billion in transfers alone since their Qatar takeover just over a decade ago.
However, money certainly has not equalled European success for the French side, and this could be deemed to the quality in midfield and defence.
Although PSG have world class players in attack, the lack of quality elsewhere has certainly held them back as they have struggled to find the suitable players to compliment those in the attacking third.
Conflict off the field
It was recently announced that Lionel Messi would be suspended by PSG after he went to Saudi Arabia for two days without granting permission from the club.
The length of the suspension is currently two games, but this conflict put serious question marks over his future at the club and it was recently announced that he will leave PSG at the end of the season. That will bring an end to a forgettable period for both parties.
