4 Things We Learned From EPL Matchday 6

As we have become so accustomed to with the English Premier League, this weekend’s round of fixtures saw plenty of action, drama and excitement. With so much to talk about, we’ve picked our top four things we learned from matchday six.

Luton get a point on the board

Luton Town finally got their first ever Premier League point on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with fellow relegation candidates Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Despite dominating the game, accumulating 2.17xG compared to Wolves’ 0.59, Luton were unable to score from open play against the 10 men of Wolves following Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s dismissal in the 39th minute. Instead, Luton had to rely on a controversial penalty call after a rebounded ball struck the hand of Joao Gomes. Carlton Morris expertly dispatched the penalty to equalise after Pedro Neto’s opener and get Luton their first point of the season.

Everton’s quickfire victory

Another team to achieve a first this season was Everton, as they achieved their first win of this campaign against Brentford.

An early Abdoulaye Doucoure goal was cancelled out 20 minutes later from Mathias Jensen’s equaliser which sent both teams into half-time on level terms. Just after the hour mark Everton retook the lead through former Brentford player James Tarkowski’s thumping header.

Within four minutes of this goal, the game sprung to life. Brentford came close to an equaliser multiple times during a goalmouth scramble, but Everton somehow survived. Moments later Everton found themselves on the attack, as James Garner sent Dominic Calvert-Lewin through. The striker made no mistake as he calmly placed the ball into the net to score again for Everton and make it 3-1 on the night.

Dramatic draw in the North London derby

The highly anticipated first North London derby of the season did not disappoint on Sunday, with the game providing plenty of action in the eventual 2-2 draw.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero had a day to forget, scoring an own goal for Arsenal’s first and giving away the penalty for Arsenal’s second goal. On the other hand, teammate Heung-min Son won’t forget his performance with him captaining the side and scoring both Tottenham’s goals, the second of which came in dramatic fashion.

After Bukayo Saka’s well taken penalty to put Arsenal 2-1 up, the celebrations that followed were ecstatic. But just a minute later the Emirates Stadium was silenced, as James Maddison pickpocketed Jorginho and sent Son through to equalise for Spurs.

Newcastle goals galore

Newcastle United finished off the weekend’s round of fixtures in style, as they embarrassed Sheffield United 8-0 in their own stadium.

It took Newcastle 21 minutes to find the opener through Sean Longstaff’s goal, but from there the goals started flowing. Kieran Tripper assisted the next three and became just the second player in Premier League history to assist three headed goals in the same match, as Dan Burn, Sven Botman and Callum Wilson all nodded in.

Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak all got themselves on the scoresheet too as Newcastle ran out 8-0 winners with all eight goals coming from different goal scorers.
